    Jul 24, 2012 - Smooth-Cast 65D #1

Soooo I was watching xrobots tutorial using Smooth-Cast 65D on foam builds... and I like what I see! BUT the question is... Is this product available in New Zealand? I doubt it. Can anyone offer a suitable alternative? I had a look on Google, but honestly I have no idea what I'm looking for :/ AND also where do you get foam? Jesus.

It appears that the closest Distributor is here:

    Distributors in New Zealand

    Rowe Trading Company
    4 Holder Avenue
    Richmond, South Australia 5033
    Phone: +61 8 8234 0000
    Fax: +61 8 8234 2092
    Email: sales@rowetrading.com.au

Since it is listed as a distributor to NZ, I would contact their sales department to see what they can do for you. I love Smooth-on materials!

As far as foam goes, you can order plastizote foam on the internet, or you can try finding anti fatigue floor mats, or foam camping mats. Try to stay in the 6-10mm range

I live in Adelaide and I bought a trial kit from that very supplier about a month ago for the same purpose and they were very helpful. Prices were listed as such in their email to me:

    Yes we do stock the SC65D in the following sizes;

    Trial kit 1lt $36.90

    1 gall kit 8lt $211.87

    5 gall kit 40lt $995.85
And I use foam camping mats, as Kevin suggested, from Kmart here in Australia and they run around $5 for a 0.5cm and $8 for 1cm thickness. I'm sure there would be something similar in your neck of the woods.

Ah, everyone is so helpful here! I love it! There's a Kmart in the next town over, I'll check it out sometime. I got an email back from that supplier, and yes he said the same thing hah, 36.90+20 for postage. I'm a bit dry for dosh right now, how far goes 1kg go? I wouldn't want to spend all that money if all I'm getting done is one helmet!

@Dark Siren - Sorry, ma'am. I should have thought about your name, sirens typically being women.

1KG is the trial kit, and it will go fast! I'm slush casting my ironman pods with it, 3-4 layers in each, and I was able to pop 5 of them, the pod is 13cm across!

I'm surprised they don't have the 15.4lbs format! The 8th on this page.

This is the best format for me, as you can do a lot with it, but when you're done, you're not stuck with limited shelf life material that will waste!

I suppose it would cost more for it to be shipped over here to him, and then he passes that cost, as well as a mark up I'd imagine, on to the consumer. It sucks for us, but you get used to things being more expensive down here in Australia. Even when our dollar was booming everything was still more expensive here than in other countries.

hmm so is getting it worth it? It'll cost me $74 NZD to get a trial kit here... Also I have had no luck finding foam... Warehouse stationary had 5 sheets of A5 foam for $5 and it was about 2mm thick. This is the closest I've found. Am I able to simply glue two of these together?

Well you could I suppose, but I find it hard to believe that nowhere in your area stocks cheap camping equipment lol. Do you have a Kmart nearby? Look in their Camping/Fishing section for it. Should find these but for cheaper than this place has them:

Foam Rolls : Kiwi Camping Company

According to their website there is a Kmart in Hastings:
Kmart Home > Locations / Hours > North Island

and according to Google Maps directions it's about a 20-30min drive from Napier. Not sure what your transportation situation is like but it might be worth a look . You can always phone ahead and find out if they have some to save you a drive if they've sold our or something .

Yeah I looked round my camping shops and what not, everything I found was over 1cm high and after buying one found it too hard to cut cleanly...

Topmark products in NZ can supply urethane resin. They have a huge range. The best foam ive found has been from the Warehouse. Foam camping mats (double bed size) are $16 and 7mm thick. Perfect for foam builds.

I got some interlocking foam mats from the Warehouse and they're brilliant. They're a bit thick but they're really stiff and hold a shape well after heat has been added. They come in packs of twelve for about $20 I think. I can't remember exactly how many or how much but I just ran out so I'll confirm when I restock. That's good about the resins Dynofiend.

Hey all, sorry to necro, but I am currently in the process of ordering some of this from a relative in the US to bring into Australia when they next visit - I have spoken to customs and they said they have no issue bringing it in, I just need to speak to the airline whether they will carry it..Customs did mention that i might need a permit from NICNAS? (gov dpt for transportation of chemicals) anyone know if this is true? Can't find much about them..
If it wasn't for the fact that SC65 is 4 times cheaper in the US, I wouldnt bother..
