    Mar 22, 2011 - Savage Opress WIP #1

Basically I had absolutely no chance of getting Tarfful done in time so I was looking at doing a relatively quick, easy and build free costume to do for Invasion Dublin 2. Being a good old Sith at heart I was looking for some inspiration.
After a bit of thinking and a few emails I managed to get access to some great reference pics from Lucasfilm. So I decided on Savage Opress.

From doing Maul in the past I had a bit of experience with this type of costume. A bit of make-up, some lenses, a few horns, a double ended saber and the costume itself. I glad to say that Clothears in the UK are taking care of the costume side of things, so that just leaves the rest for me to do.
So with a little help from a pal's lifecast I sculpted up some horns which i then silicone moulded. I have poured them up with fastcast resin and given them a touch of paint and laquer.

Next I gutted my Maul FX saber and took some measurements and did some drawings. Then off to a local friend of mine who is a master of the milling machine(and a Star Wars nut). We came up with this 3 three part aluminium saber, that screws together to make one mutha of a double ender.

When assembled the hilt alone ends up over 60cm long!!

Just need to add the greeblies and rewire the saber back in and we're there.
Spent Friday night doing a make-up test, well how else would you spend your Friday nights? It's always a challenge to get these stylised animated characters to work in the real world. After a bit of adjusting I think I worked it out.
Just waiting to see what Alison at Clothears comes back with now. I'm sure it will be stunning as usual!

I like how something like this is "relatively quick and easy" for you. It's awesome.

Got this finished last weekend so I thought I had better pop the rest of the build up.
I cast some horns in Resin and some stunt horns in a semi-soft foam. I found that when I span saber over my head I would occasionally catch one of the huge horns. So the soft ones allowed a bit of 'give' when they took a knock. Plus it helped to blend them into my head a bit better.

Once the horns were all painted I got hold of a pair of my old Vader boots which I added some toe caps to. I used some talc and resin to make these, and after a bit of sanding, paint and weathering I siliconed them to the boot.

The shin guards are leather and made by Clothears along with the rest of the sort parts.

The nails were another problem when spinning such a large saber. Instead of using regular painted nails I made some soft ones out of latex. Again these allow loads of flexibility without the worry of losing a nail.

I finally did my first big try-on at Invasion Dublin 2 which was a bit of a gamble. But it turned out ok, just a few tweaks needed for next time.

The one with you and Maul.

That is just too cool man. You really look like you would be his older brother in that pic.
