Sam from Trick 'r Treat
Hey guys,
Well, I figured after 2 consecutive years of Star Wars costumes (Stormtrooper and Biker Scout) I'd be more original .. but yet .. I had no idea what to do. A buddy from work who works on the side for Sideshow as a sculptor showed me the new '09-'10 catalog and I stumbled upon the 12" Sam which I had no idea what it was .. After some sniffing around the net, I read about the movie .. then did a little search here but didn't find much in term of do it yourself .. so I figured, hey, might as well show my WIP here! Looked for refs yesterday .. and then today, I was off to tissue stores ... So there you go .. I plan on checking the movie soon .. but it the meantime, here's where I am after a day of shopping to get the material... Orange/rust polar tissue Pajama pattern for adult x-large Tissue for head (no idea how it's called in english) 2 big buttons Rope for hand stitching on head Big rope for neck My WIP will be here... http://www.pbase.com/bigturc/sam Here's a compilation of the best refs I found on the net .. I wish I would know how the back is done... http://www.pbase.com/bigturc/sam_ref

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
Hey .. I also need to brainstorm on the head part ..
I figured I'd get a big balloon, cover it with glue and paper to get a shape and apply the head material over it .. I also thought about doing a metal wire frame .. but I'm not so convinced about this ... Also, to prevent the head from bubbling around .. perhaps I'll get a construction hat and wire it to the round shape .. what do you think? Any other ideas? PS Almost forgot to note .. instead of being 4'2" .. I'm more 6'3" .. that shall be interesting!!

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
given how smooth the head is, they probably did it over a rigid structure, like say a hollow acrylic sphere.

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
Right .. but the "under jaw" part is way less smooth though .. I feel like it's built over a 3/4 sphere shape ..
The coolest thing I could find is some kind of styrofoam sphere to build over .. it's not totally smooth though .. Check here: http://www.pbase.com/bigturc/image/118444032 http://www.pbase.com/bigturc/image/118444041 Not even sure what the heck this is ... http://www.pbase.com/bigturc/image/118444034 Maybe I'll know when I watch the movie later

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
Well instead of forming it over something, why not try to create the shape with boning or something along those lines?
I am going to build this costume for my son, who stands at 4' 5" for now. I was planning on making this mask in layers, burlap on the top, buckram (a stiff fabric used in hat making, and something soft on the inside, like cotton flannel or even silk, you just do not want to have burlap rubbing against your face all night trust me. In the layers, you can add in either boning (used in corset making) or wires to help shape the head. I guess you could also use starch as well to maintain the round shape. EDIT: Why did I not think of this before... Plastic Canvas can be used to create the round shape and then the burlap can be layered ontop. I know Plastic Canvas can be formed into a round shape since I am currently using a Plastic Canvas "skull" for another costume I am working on. Plus Plastic Canvas is cheap. Now for the back, I believe you are referring to flap on the rear right? I plan to create a false panel and stitch it in place as one of my last steps in creating the PJ's. I just have to figure out how to make the attached feet and make them durable enough to walk around outside in. I'm hoping that my son gets a couple of wearings out of this costume. Now I'm trying to find a decent lollipop, hell it can even be made of plastic, for my son to carry around with him. Last edited by Cleverlilminx; 10-18-2009 at 05:34 PM. Reason: Brainstorm! |

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
That's cool, but you can't really see any pictures without registering (which I did).
I wonder if there's a pattern online for the pajamas or mask. |

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
The only patterns for PJ's like this one I ever see are in toddler sizes. I know a company called The Green Pepper used to make an adult size, but not sure if they still offer that patten anymore. At least they no longer offer it on their site. This is a simple item to sew up that you can do it without a pattern. Just get some paper as big as the person who is going to wear the costume and have someone else trace them. One panel of fabric for the front, one panel of fabric for the back. Add on the feet and a zipper/velcro on the back. This costume, after watching the movie again, does not seem to have a front seam down the middle. At least this is how I'll be making my son's costume.
Anyone have luck locating the lollipop however? |

I'm strongly thinking about doing one of these as a static display.

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I got some materials put together for mine last night. Buttons could be trickier than I originally thought though. The feet are something I need to take a closer look at. Patterns cost a lot more than I thought they would, and finding the right size is a real pain.

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
I got a pattern for an adult size rabbit which is close enough to the real deal for me.
After all, I'll try to get it as close as possible, but I only have so much time to do it and I don't fancy screen accuracy on that one. I got a McCalls pattern (similar to this one: http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M8...tumes&page=all) .. I'll try to modify it to get a better likeness ... It costs me around 5$ I think. |

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
Yeah, I saw some similar ones yesterday at the fabric store but they were all around 16 bucks.
Kinda sucks, the person that I have do my sewing said she wouldn't do this for me because its for Halloween. She's a pretty strict Jehovah's Witness...ugh No offense to her, but this sucks, lol, she's an expert seamstress! |

The feet some to be a little different than the norm, I didn't see any patterns that were similar.

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
Agreed!
That's why I'll need to tweak the pattern anyway. Worst case, I end up with boots to walk outside or socks inside .. if I ever get to the point where I need the feet to be a perfect match, I'll be plenty satisfied with the costume!

Looks like your on the right track. Sorry for the Sort of off topic question here, but does any one know the name of the music from the movie. It kinda of sounds like a tatter tale song, it's really creepy sort of "freddy like" It starts at about 1:26 in this trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggDNhd5FC2U Can any one help? |

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
Sewing of the costume is 80% done .. I messed up and cut a sleeve on the wrong side of the fabric so I'll need to get some more tomorrow and finish it. Also, will need a zipper or velcro and 2 more buttons for the flap on the back.
I thought I was smart by adding material to the already made pattern .. but now, my suit is really big .. REALLY big .. I float in it (I'll post pic of what it looks like) and although I know that it looks way too big .. I still liked that it isn't fit like on the pattern cover to give it more a child look if you know what I mean... Here's the button painted on the burlap to get an idea of the final look of it. I'm quite happy with it! ![]() And here's some caps from the movie I took as ref for the suit...

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
Nice!!! Post some pics when its done. How are you sewing the footie, with a machine or by hand?
I was trying to find some pics of what the top of the front looks like. I thought I saw a black button or two. And also was looking for where the zipper is, think its the line on the front because there's no seam on the back. |

Re: Sam from Trick 'r Treat
Well, I kinda messed up
![]() I went to do the sewing at a friend's house (she has a machine instead of me doing all by hand) .. so I didn't have the movie nor my refs and OF COURSE I just did the caps) .. so for now, I didn't do the legs to go over the foot .. but I made the legs so long - I added 6" to the pattern legs and now I'm glad I did - that I'll be able to reduce them in diameter and make them less tubular at the ankle (if that's any clearer). I also added around 4" of diameter to the pattern's legs (0" from under the arm pit to 4" around the end of the legs - wanted that big baggy look - but I think that was unnecessary and I'll probably remove it now. I'll take pictures before I do so. As for the front ... there's pictures on the net that has buttons on the front (marketing sketches?) but then, a lot of other diffs too and also, there's other pictures with a big front sewing line (Sideshow doll). If you check my ref gallery here, you'll notice that there's none at all in the movie. Which is why I changed the pattern to not have 2 half for the front, but only one big piece .. my zipper will be on the back and will reach under the flap. Front w/ buttons ![]() Front w/ line ![]() Screen cap (no buttons, no line)
