Oct 21, 2010 - RPF First Annual Halloween Contest! #1

    Update 11/08:

    VOTING HAS BEGUN!

Cast your vote in each category; female, male and kids!

    http://www.therpf.com/f24/rpf-first-...te-now-100135/

    http://www.therpf.com/f24/rpf-first-...te-now-100138/

    http://www.therpf.com/f24/rpf-first-...te-now-100137/

    ---

    UPDATE:

We are getting in a LOT of great costumes! Some beautiful, some terrifying, some humorous and some just as cute as can be! Because the images being sent in are virtually every size, we are going to try to scale all to a standardized size for the contest. We will try to do this as fairly as possible and not actually alter the image you sent in, but I did want to put it out there, that all images will be scaled to a uniform size.

    ----

Hello all and welcome to our first annual Halloween Costume contest!

One of the coolest aspects of this site is the incredible costumes (and props) built and worn by our members! From Halo to Hellboy, Iron Man to Indiana Jones, and the American Dream to Aeon Flux our members have some of the BEST costumes out there!

While most of us costume more or less all year round, Halloween is the perfect opportunity to show off your costume and possibly win prizes!

We will have three categories with a first place winner for each category as well as 2 honorable mentions in each category.

    The categories are:

    • Females in costume
    • Males in costume
    • Kids (12 and under) in costume

Why are we breaking the categories down in such a seemingly "sexist" manner? Because if we didn't, you guys wouldn't stand a chance against the girls! Seriously, one of the biggest complaints in costume contests is that the most scantily clad female always wins the contest so we are avoiding that by splitting the contest between the guys and the girls. We have also added a childrens category to help encourage our 2nd generation RPFers and to ensure our love for props and costumes is passed on to that next generation.

Terms and Conditions - PLEASE READ AS NOT FOLLOWING THESE TERMS MAY DISQUALIFY YOU FROM BEING ENTERED INTO THE CONTEST!

You MUST be a registered member of therpf.com! If you are not a registered member, your entry will be disqualified! Click this link to register.

You may enter 1 time per contest by performing the tasks listed below.

    Entry Submission
Email us at promo@therpf.com with "2010 Halloween Contest" as the subject line.

Include the following in your email:

    • Your board name
    • The name of your character/costume and what it is from example: "Batman from The Dark Knight"
    • What category you are entering (men, women, children)
    • A good, clear photo of your costume that will be posted publicly on the site.
    • A second photo that is "proof" it is your costume in order to dissuade those who might simply submit a random photo from off the internet. The "proof" photo needs to be you, in costume, with either a sheet of paper that says "The RPF Costume Contest" or a photo of you in costume with your computer in the background with the RPF up on the computer. This is a very important step, so make sure to include your "proof" photo when entering!

    How are winners determined?

We will accept entries through Nov 5 (so you have time to submit your Halloween photos).

On Nov 8, we will create 3 polls which will include the entrants (by photo, not name) and have the members vote on the winners through Nov 11. Winners will be announced on Nov 12.

    What are the prizes?

Female in costume - first place - $100 Gift Card to Amazon.com
Female in costume - honorable mention #1 - RPF Challenge Coin
Female in costume - honorable mention #2 - RPF Challenge Coin

Males in costume - first place - $100 Gift Card to Amazon.com
Male in costume - honorable mention #1 - RPF Challenge Coin
Male in costume - honorable mention #2 - RPF Challenge Coin

Kid in costume - first place - $50 Gift Card to Amazon.com
Kid in costume - honorable mention - $10 Gift Card to Amazon.com
Kid in costume - honorable mention - $10 Gift Card to Amazon.com

It's a brave, new RPF, Toby! I love it. I'm also glad they split it into categories.

I have a question for the staff. Since membership is open, should you leave it to members who were here by a certain date? Like you needed to be a member by such and such a time this month? I'm not suggesting cutting out all newbies, but with the RPF being a rapidly rising site in terms of population and visits, would you want someone coming in, winning and never being seen from again?

    Just a thought.

Does it matter if you're a female, dressing as a male character? Should I start complaining about the scantily clad gals now?

My costume is of my own design this year so I'll enter my son instead since his is a replica costume.

Great idea for a contest and opening it up to the kids.

if they wanted that , they should put in the rules that it couldn't have been worn at a convention or seen previously on the RPF...

Can we include additional pictures that shows details of the costume? For the costume I have in mind, there are parts of the costume that aren't readily seen, but are very detailed.

    Qui,

You make a good point, but we welcome and will allow anyone who is a member to enter. As this is our first costume contest, we will be watching closely to see what works and what does not, so we can make it even better the next time. We are still growing and learning in these areas.

Feel free to begin complaining now!

In all seriousness, we put this together a bit late and this was the most simple and fair way we could come up with the divide it out. As I mentioned in the previous response to Qui, we will be watching closely and if we feel the voting doesn't go well or is skewed more by sex appeal than by costume, we will make changes for next years contest.

I will say, when we first came up with this way to divide the categories, my first concern was the numerous women who dress up as male characters. We will see how it goes, and make modifications to future contests accordingly.

I wish we had too. This was a bit of a last minute thing (which is why there are Amazon.com gift cards instead of more specific prizes) and we debated strongly about whether or not to do the contest this year at all. Ultimately even though it is a bit late, we felt it was better to do it and offer prizes than to not do it at all and have to wait a whole year.

    Lynn,

You can, but only one image can be used for the contest. I am assuming we are going to have quite a number of entrants, and for voting purposes, we are going to post just one image of each entrant along with a number and have people vote based on that. However, if you have a cool costume you want to show off, don't limit it to just the contest, show us what you have and your hard work with a thread for your costume!

If your costume is kick ass, I will vote for you. Since this isn't a nightclub, I highly doubt the most scantily clad female will win. I think(And hope!) you will have to bring your "A" game to get the gift card.

Agreed. Since this is a costume site filled with people who appreciate the time and effort it takes to create a good costume and isn't a drunken rabble trying to get a girl to take off her top, I think we have a much better chance of more fair voting (although I still think if weput guys and girls together, the girls would win it). We will see!

Question, I want to enter my kids costume, do I have to regester my kid as a member?
ALso If I enter my kid does that count as my entry aswell, or can I enter my kid and myself?.
    Thanks.

    familyman,

That is a great question and one that is certainly not clear in the rules above.

Children can be entered under their parents account and in that case, you can enter more than once; one for yourself and one for your child (if you have multiple children, you can enter one for each child).

This is going to be epic. So much talent here. Will there be a dedicated entries thread? I don't have anything worthy of entering, but will certainly be checking out those that do!

Well done, RPF staff. This is a great idea.
