Aug 11, 2012 - Rondo on foam test (with video) #1

Yes, I've jumped on the foam Ironman band wagon as well, but I'll post about that in my other build thread.

    Rondo strength test - YouTube

I made a short little video to show how I might coat my suit, might.
The hesitation come from the sandabilty (If that's not a word, it is now)of the mix I made, very tough going.

You would need to dremel sand edge and corner build ups. That said I just eyeballed the mix, but I think I will be more inclined to try a 70/30 bodyfiller/resin mix next try.

Foam:- Campri Foam Sleeping Mat 2012 - SportsDirect.com

Bodyfiller:-Upol Easy Easy-1 Upol car body filler 3.5ltr tin Easy Sanding - UK Mainland delivery | eBay

    Resin:- Polyester casting resin. MBFG.co.uk

Excuse the accent, I'm a Brummie (A person from Birmingham, UK).

The first crack that appears after I dropped it was due in part to a blade cut in the foam.

    Thanks for this video!
I was debating whether I should go with rondo or smooth on 65d
    This seems good enough

Did you just brush on the rondo and sand?

Was there a lot of texture that needed to be smoothed out or was it self leveling at all?

For the test I just poured it on and it self leveled and was very smooth. It did build up around the edges of the scrape piece and compared to normal filler it was very tough to sand.

If you are going to use this method I would paint it on in very, very thin coats and make sure it doesn't build up in detail or corner pieces. Take 15 minutes between coats to give the last layer to gel up. Layers can be sanded after 20 minutes give or take.

That's really impressive. Looks like a nice way of making all kinds of armour. Thanks for the video.

EDIT - Just checked out the MBFG website. Exactly which type of casting resin did you use?

Mole, I am 99% sure it was this stuff, Crystics 9293 Polyester Casting Resin - mbfg.co.uk
Had it a while now and the label has fallen off.

@ Grave, I think a few of the foam builders are just using this method due to the speed you can build part up at and then plan to use the rondo to add detail and some longevity to the parts.

Because you can get amazing results relatively quickly and easily. I certainly don't have the skill or knowledge to sclupt, mold and cast an Iron Man suit but I could give this a go and even if I didn't get it perfect it would still yield a decent costume.

Rebo - Thanks. I'm never quite sure what people are talking about when then mention resins so direct links are always a godsend.
