Robotech Cyclone CVR-3 Armor

So about four months ago, I got a wild idea to take on this project. It was a costume I've wanted to do for years, but lacked the skills needed to pull it off right. So, after doing Clone Trooper armor from scratch a few years ago and some other misc. props, I figured I could do this. Save up some cash, buy the materials, block out some time and set a finish date, which was this weekend.

After working every single day since, I pulled it off. Everything was sculpted by hand using 2lb. foam. Silicone and Plasti-paste molds, final castings are in urethane resin backed by fiberglass.

You can see all my WIP pictures here... MobileMe Gallery

Some final pictures...

More final pictures here: MobileMe Gallery
Thanks to Charlie Mann for taking the pictures. We hope to eventually make everything in Vac-Formed plastic, because hand-laying fiberglass is a chore.

Oddly enough I was just reading the Robotech comics. Very cool. Every notice that some of the alien guns from Halo look a bit like the guns in this series?

That is freakin' AWESOME!! I grew up loving this show. Did you make the weapon as well or were you able to find it somewhere?

Re: Robotech Cyclone CVR-3 Armor

Thanks guys. I also made the blaster, check my WIP (work in progress) link above to see the sculpting/molding, etc.

I'd like to make the rifle version of the blaster as well before DCon.

Re: Robotech Cyclone CVR-3 Armor

Looks pretty good. However, if you don't mind me saying so but your boots are a bit on the small side compared to the anime and I think the thigh armor might be a little off. Still, it's definitely good work regardless and I hope that I can do half as good work as you when/if I decide to finally tackle making a set of ATAC armor from Southern Cross.

Awesome build!
Boots like fine, very proportionate to the rest of the suit.
Thigh armor looks just like it should IMO.

This is incredible. I've seen that guy who did a complete cyclone motorcycle battle suit, but I don't think I've seen just the armor before.
Great work.
Does the visor flip down? If so, can we see how that looks?

It does not. I could make it functional but it's just an off-the-shelf motorcycle visor and doesn't have the larger shape like in the cartoon when in the 'down' position.

I actually agree.
When you're sculpting something big like that and comparing it to your actual leg (which is skinny), I felt using some reserve was prudent. Besides, with all this stuff, it's interpretation. I've got screen grabs from the cartoon where in one episode they're proportional like I made them, others where it's even thinner and more form-fitting, and others where it's honking huge. I made the decision to ignore the promo art that you see associated with toys, etc. because it was exaggerated much larger than what's seen in the cartoon. I also wanted it to be a practical costume.

Yeah, that's what I figured. If you made them accurate to the line art/character reference drawings then it would be pretty hard to move around in since those boots were pretty large.

If/when you decide to make the rifle version of the Galants it should be pretty easy. You'd just need to thread the barrel to accept the barrel extension and then work out a way to attach the stock to the back and then you have yourself the rifle version Galant. If you make it so the parts are removable you would not only be show accurate but you'd save yourself money in material costs and make it more portable to boot since you could break it down into 3 parts for storage or travel.
