Jun 25, 2011 - Question about Ironman Helmet Mouth area. #1

Was what wondering what people do withe the mouth area on their ironman helmets. Is it complately covered in or do some put a mesh area to help breath?.
Also is it just black or a shade of some other colour?
    thanks.
PS does the MK3 helmet have the details in the dark area of the cheeks or is that just the MK 4?

I think whether you want it open or not is a personal preference, but the color of those panels is typically a VERY dark grey. And I believe it's only the MK4+6 that have the cheek detail.

If you want the cheek details or teeth, get pepakura and download Sharkheads helmet file. Print out the teeth pieces and transfer them to some craft foam sheets and glue them onto whatever you use to close the gap.

Thanks, I have closed the gap now, see my Ironman thread, I may do the teeth thing I don't know, I can always burn the markings in later.
I may leave a small hole hidden in the mouth area for a straw or something.
    Thanks guys.

The Mk III also has the "teeth" - it depends on the cgi file used for reference.

Bimmer did a detailing kit you can buy from Shapeways JY link

Since the faceplate usually opens, most builds I've seen keep that area solid (no mesh or openings). One reason for this is the bleed of light from the eyes. I've noticed that if you don't have a good overlapping 'lip' for the faceplate to rest on, you get some light bleeding out around spaces on the faceplate.

If you are leaving yours solid (no movable faceplate), then you might want to keep at least that 'straw hole' as it will be easier to stay hydrated that way rather than puling the full helmet off every time you need a drink.

    It's looking really, REALLY good!

Thanks, yeah I am keeping the face plate on on this one. Even though I have a hinge system worked out, the foam just isn't strong enough to hold the hinges in place. I am loving your work aswell, now that you are back off holiday get going on the build I have been wanting updates for weeks! lol.
