Did you get a cotton replica or a original nomex suit? I wore these for years while I was flying aboard Navy P-3C Orion aircraft, and the cotton copies are much more comfortable than Nomex. Nomex is much hotter, heavier, and doesn't breathe like the cotton replicas do.

Also, was there a minimum order on your name patches? I'm sure alot of people would be interested in having their own name on patches, so there might be an audience interested in purchasing them...

But excellent job on it all either way, very cool! Makes me want to find a cotton replica of the jumpsuit!

I ordered the Nomex. I'm going to see the film again this week, but I'm wondering what Shaw wore underneath. I'm not planning on making the gauze "bikini", but I hope it's comfortable enough (if warm, I tend to feel the cold so warm is welcome) to wear next to the skin. Was it typical to wear a layer underneath?

I have a Nomex version. It is indeed hot and heavy.

I'm still waiting for my suit, but I did find the triangle shaped buckles are called v-rings:

Yay!! My suit arrived this morning! It reminds me of the uniforms EMTs wear... I'm surprised as the fit is pretty good but needs some major alteration around the lower half. I am wondering the women's cut is radically different because the excess fabric combined with the bulk of zipperness are chafing at my inner thighs as I walk. And as you guys said it's pretty hot too. It could lose an inch or two length ways around the natural waist to give a more feminine cut, bringing the crotch and seat higher where it's supposed to be. The belt Noomi wears would hide this alteration, and for me anyway it's just at the right point around my waist to be comfortable and flattering. Wonder if I could do it in a way to avoid removing the body zip...

I don't think the left sleeve has enough room for a big round patch. There's just about 3" or so between the pocket on the arm and the shoulder seams. And for the name patch I wonder if it could be printed onto the back of some yellow velcro as the texture of the back looks pretty accurate.

Whoa, the first link is pretty neat! I'd certainly focus on it and maybe I'll place an order. Thanks!

    OK, some pics! ^_^

Firstly, I'm using this pic as my reference:
    http://i.imgur.com/fmMBO.jpg

I think her suit might have been tan and dyed khaki? Or might not be Nomex but possibly a polyester material? I bought Nomex and apparently only come in sage green (which I bought) or tan but other suppliers like Propper make them in other colours. And her belt looks khaki green, but I prefer how black looks against this sage green to khaki.

    The label inside:

So other than being the wrong shade of green, my suit is also not so shiny in the light, and my zippers are black (look bronze where the paint wears off but Noomi's has bronze zippers throughout).

Left breast pocket. After one wash you can see the black start to wear off from the zip showing brass underneath:
    http://i.imgur.com/ZZX5rh.jpg

Left sleeve pocket. Noomi's suit doesn't have the flap and the patch is woven partially over the pocket. The zip on my suit is YKK. I can't make out what zip her suit has but it is a clue anyway to the right brand suit.

The suit feels softer after washing. Is it really Nomex if fabric conditioner helped make it feel softer?

I received the patches. Name patch and Weyland wings are looking pretty nice, while the Prometheus patch isn't as good as I expected. I think I'll be doing another one.

holy cow, what do I have to do to get a set of these patches??? I tried asking a company that does customs if they would run something like that for me and they wouldn't get back to me...
Please let me know! if you redo the mission patch, I'll gladly buy that one off ya.

Chloe, you will find that the sage nomex suits vary depending on the maker ranging from a lighter green to a dark brown green with a purple sheen.

I have 3 used ones and each is different.
I also have a new nomex tanker suit that is a lighter green.

Doing a quick google search the flap over the sleeve pocket appears to be on all the newer suits and also shows a large variety of different shades of green, some almost into the aqua blue range.

Also don't forget to take into account, lighting, film or photo shop color corrections and your monitor settings, even the type of lighting will change how the material looks.

Thanks, Division 6. ^.^ I was expecting them to be the same shade, from new at least. I think mine is cotton after all, which is probably a good thing, so I might try dyeing it.

Those patches are great. Good work on identifying the suit, too! I spent ages prowling the web trying to work out whether it was sourced wardrobe.

    Small update...

I caved and bought a couple of patches from Blue Tiger Trading (no affiliation). The colours are really not a good match and also the font is wrong on the Weyland Megacorp patch, but they might do for now? The perfectionist in me is not happy. I'm starting to think the wings are a bit too small and should be 4" wide.

Now I have to sew them all on.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the 'cheap' ~$40 suits and the more common ~$180 ones?

The more expensive ones are most likely Nomex fire retardant suits. Real flight sights are Nomex, while cheap knockoffs are not.

Thats seems logical. Now for the purposes of a costume, does it make sense to get the more expensive one? Are they much better constructed?

The cheap knock offs are usually cotton.

If you have an actual surplus store near you check them out, sometimes they have new or near mint condition Nomex suits cheap.
Even check out thrift (second hand) stores, they sometimes have them super cheap.

You can also find them at gun shows.

Does anyone have any leads on the bag they used to carry the urn and later in the movie Davids head? It looked like a plain brown canvas gym bag.

Hmm, does anyone know what pattern flight suit Ravel and Janek have on?

    They don't look like Shaw's CWU-27/P.

For costuming I'd go with the cotton ones, they're not only cheaper they're also much lighter and cooler to wear. Generally speaking, there's very little to no need for the fire resistant properties of Nomex when costuming so you're really not losing anything by going with the cotton ones.

Actually I ended up buying a new-old-stock surplus unworn nomex suit from 1988 for US$60 shipped.
