    Jul 31, 2012 - Plastidip and paint question. #1

Hi, I am making a foam dark knight Batman suit. I was just wondering what order I should work in. For example: Plastidip, paint, then plastidip again; what order should I do this stuff in? Also what paint should I use, just spray paint or? Thanks and I hope to hear back soon.

Plasti-dip is a rubber so most paints aren't going to have a great time sticking to it especially if the piece is going to flex at all. What colors are you looking to add besides black?

Just black and grey, that is really about it.

As far as I know, it's plastidip, primer, paint, clear coat. No need for a second plastidip layer, it'd also cover up your paint anyway.

There are spray paints that can stick to flexible surfaces.

You need to use an adhesion promoter as well.

So can anyone give me the order of how I should do this because I spent a while making this foam suit and I don't want to screw it up at the end. I would like some paint that I could brush on for detail and some paint that I could spray on before the detailing just to make the entire thing black. Please give links if possible. Also do you guys recommend the clear, spray plasti?

The only thing I used was plasti-dip honestly. Two coats. For the carbon fiber detailing, I just printed the carbon fiber image texture on card stock paper, then cut out the shapes and glued them onto the areas that required them. Then just brushed acrylic glue on top of it (it dries clear) so it's water proof.

Which carbon fiber detailing did you print? Can you post a link or something? Thanks.

I have learned that you should coat your pieces with wood glue(PVA) first, then the plasti-dip.

Do you guys recommend clear plasti dip or black? Does it make a difference?

Thanks, but may I ask, what does the wood glue do that the plasti dip can't?

It makes a seal, and smooths the surface, making the plastidip smooth as well. But, by all means, if you use plastidip only and get the surface you like, go for it-the less steps, the better!

brushable Mod-podge works well to give a clear, flexible seal after 2 coats. thats what i'm using because the PVA glue cracked and wrinkled on my ab piece for Iron Man costume

If you are using foamies or something similar (a non-closed foam), the key is in sealing it before painting or plastidipping. Otherwise, the foam sucks it up and you need LOTS just to coat it. The best method I know of to maintain some flexibility is to make a mixture of 1 part Aleene's flexible fabric glue, 1 part Sobo glue, and 2 parts water. Mix it up and then paint it on the foam. You should be able to get 2 coats on in any given day. After a good 5 or 6 coats, it will be sealed and ready to paint. You can also seal it with PVA (i.e. Elmer's) glue, but I'm not sure if it will be as flexible that way. After that you can coat it with Plastidip (black) or paint depending on the look you want to achieve. Most guys at the BOTB just use Plastidip.
