    Jul 31, 2012 - Pepakura to Foam - A How To? #1

    Hi all,

I've gotten a highly detailed model, that I would like to turn into a foam template via Pepakura. It's highly detailed and I just wanted to get tips from those who have done it before. Esepcially areas that have a hard "curve" built in.

    Thanks

what do you see a s highly detailed? if its very high poly and detail, its gonna be hard enough to transform it to foam.

yeah its high poly. I attempted, but there is so much various levels and curves, that it has become a little of a headache. Just wanted to see if someone has tips on how to transform it to a foam template.

would it be best to just do the normal pepakura and piece it together, then "cut" into it to try and flatten it out to then trace onto foam?

thats what i would do personally. trying to figure out what pieces should stay and what should be left out on a screen is hard enough, and it gets harder the more complicated a model is. this way, you can see what you need. also you dont waste foam, as you allready have a perfectly sized piece.

Thanks. I guess I'll spend the next few weeks cutting and pasting.

I'll see if I can post the foam version templates as PDF's once I'm done (just have to scan them)

Yeah, I saw that originally, but it doesn't address high poly models, with lots of curves, very fine edges and other details that cutting the pepakura model to make it into a foam template.

If you know 3d software, convert then from high poly to low (or less) poly.
    Or manually delete the vertexs/spline.
Only from then you can upload again to pepakura software.

Oh, I didn't read it well, a pdf? Manually cut it is then....

The only 3d software I've ever used was Maya 1.0 and that was over 15 years ago, so out unfortunately, of the question (seriously I have forgotten how to do anything in 3D).

I only have the pepakura, I could export out to OBJ but it will do me no good.

May I ask what the model is of? If you're keeping it a secret for a reason then disregard this question lol. I'm just a curious person by nature :P.

Here's my personal view on modifying Pepakura files for foam, and still leaving the correct curves in, but removing extra cuts/eges etc where they don't need to be: XRobots - How to modify pepakura templates for foam, includes my Iron Man costume suit - YouTube

That's what I did for my entire foam suit. More here: http://xrobots.co.uk/IM6/index_foam.html

Thanks xrobots, so its essentially the same; piecing it together first then make your foam cuts from the templates.
