I've never been intensely into comics, or into Thor specifically, but a combination of a few things has come into play to get me interested in this idea.
First, with the new movie coming out, I'd have to say interest is at a high point for all things Thor related.
Second, I am personally interested in Norse mythology, and the persona of Odin has always been something I've found fascinating.
Third, my interest in creating costumes has reached new levels, as can be witnessed by my joining of the RPF.
Fourth, in searching out appropriate costumes for myself, certain considerations needed to be taken. My own physical attributes don't lend themselves to costuming - while not particularly overweight, I am not a small man. At 6' even, and 240lbs, I'm much larger than most comic characters, and can't pull off a Spiderman costume even on my best days. I've also had a beard growing for almost 2 years, and there's no way I'd even consider losing it for the sake of a costume. There are limited amounts of bearded heroes - I'm relegated to Wolverine (but would need to shave part of my face - he's out), Thor (I'm not blonde), Hercules (potential, but he goes bare-chested, and I'm not that ripped - along with another factor that we'll get to), and Odin (winner winner, chicken dinner).
Between my beard and my body type, I think Odin will make a good fit. It seems strangely coincidental that all of these things are coming together at this time - mere days after completing my most recent tattoo:
With the decision made, I'm off to find reference images. When looking through comic captures, I realized Odin has very different helmets and outfits in basically every book he's in. This makes choosing a point of reference pretty difficult.
I hate the outfit Anthony Hopkins wears in the movie, so that one is out.
On the other hand, I found a few different statues with varying details but the same basic outfit, and I think it will do:
This will be a difficult costume for me, I'll need to learn a million new things as I go, but no guts no glory, right?
As an additional complication, like I needed more, I hate the helmet on the statue. This is one thing the movie got right. Here are a couple screen caps from a display of the Odin helmet from Thor:
I'm extremely interested in making this helmet. It's completely bad*ss. I'm sure I'll end up molding and casting it, there will possibly be a run of kits (I'm not certain I could do it in one piece), but that's a looooong way off.
If any of you have a copy of that statue and can take detailed high-res pics for me, or have suggestions on materials, etc., I'd be happy to hear from you.
This is my first full on attempt at a costume replica, so I'm totally jazzed to get started. It will have to wait until at least next week, because of the holiday, but 2011 will be a pretty exciting year for this build, rest assured!
