Re: NEW DREDD picture - Eagle pad
Having been a long-time follower and reader of all things Dredd and had high hopes for this movie, hoping it would rectify the horrible attempt that was the Stallone movie.
Why insist on the tiny,70s shoulderpads and bucketsized helmet? There's a reason why various parts of his uniform has gradually evolved into the size they are today (not counting the helmet) I just don't get why they have to necessarily fix something that's not broken and works perfectly well visually in the comics. Who cares if the enormous shoulderpads he's wearing in the comics "wouldn't look right in the real world"? Please, part of the entire judge idea is this larger-than-life persona/authority figure, and thus they wear all these oversized accessories on them anyway. IMHO, Colin MacNeil draws a pretty close-to-perfect version of ol' stoneyface: http://www.hypergeek.ca/wp-content/u...redd1650-1.jpg So now that they finally had another shot at creating a more accurate version of the Dredd figure, they have to go ahead and partially screw it up visually... Re: NEW DREDD picture - Eagle pad
My guess is that the film-makers isn't making a "comic-book science-fiction" version of Dredd.
Instead I think they're going for a gritty, realistic, near future style, maybe something in the style of Mad Max or Escape From New York vibe..? So no aliens, lasers or flying cars etc but a more "believable" design in that environment. This Dredd version is inspired by the early drawings of the first Dredd comics from the 70s when the armour wasn't that bulky and Dredd being a biker-cop. The Dredd-armour in those pics is consistent of biker body-protection. |

Re: NEW DREDD picture - Eagle pad
Having seen detailed photos of this costume in all it's glory I can say that it is a great piece of work...very detailed and very believeable. It's not my favourite Dredd incarnation though. I'd like to have seen the big gold eagle too...but it's been done. The new Dredd is a super low budget movie. If you knew how much $ there was available for the costume you'd be shocked that they were able to make something so nice.

Re: NEW DREDD picture - Eagle pad
Sounds like they're starting from his roots (hence the early costume)... almost like they're lining up a trilogy, where the final one is his later bigger, larger-than-life costume.
Edit: the budget for this one could be small, 'cause they're not sure. But the sequels will certainly have a pile of money thrown at them if this is a success, and what's lacking could be fixed. |

Re: NEW DREDD picture - Eagle pad
New Dredd pics here:
New Dredd Photos Debut | Superhero Hype As a long-time reader of all things Dredd, I can honestly say I couldn't care less about the actor not being some kind of beefy bodybuilder. IMHO the character suits being lean, lanky and mean, as the fundamental idea of Dredd is that he's a 100% physical incarnation of the Law itself - so he doesn't a very impressive physique to do the talking for him: His blind devotion and sheer mentality in itself is enough. Clint Eastwood 15+/- years ago would've made for a sensible choice of actor in my mind. Old, grim and stringy enough to play the part, and with that Dirty Harry frown to go with it. Looks like Urban tries too hard to pull this off, I'd rather see them go with a more characteristic-looking actor. Doesn't really matter if he's famous or not. Stallone sucked as the judge anyway, and the whole movie turned out to be a steaming pile. In regard to the costume: Don't care much for all the straps and extra padding on the chest, and I think they should've kept something more like Stallone's shoulderpads for this version too: huge, oversized, intimidating gear. That being said, the helmet could've been somewhat smaller, and I don't care much for the fact that they kept the entire visor black, not keeping the bottom of it clear like in the comics - I don't see why they changed that.. Glad they kept the upside-down "V" though. |

Re: NEW DREDD picture - Eagle pad
I love the photo of Karl kicking the door in.
I can see what they're going for with the costume. I think the new pictures look very promising. I doubt he'll be pulling that face in the entire movie, looks like a publicity pose. |

Re: NEW DREDD picture - Eagle pad
Hi Guys,
At least it looks mean and dirty not all shiny like the Stalone version. I bet he doesn't keep saying, "I knew you'd say that!" too. Craig. |

Re: NEW DREDD picture - Eagle pad
The problem is that the actors eyeline is inconsistent with the eyeline on the helmet. Their eyes actually line up with the end of the nose bridge pieces. As a still picture it throws the whole helmet off a bit. Could be this was a concious decision to give the actors a better field of vision when wearing them i.e. Stormtrooper helmets look great but you wouldn't want to run down the street wearing one. The effect may be better when seen as a moving costume on screen

No. The rest of the costume and the actors are too small.

Re: NEW DREDD picture - Eagle pad
I friggin love this new dredd costume. Nice to see the eagle shoulder is still there but just toned down. The costume fits the real world and used look I think they are going for. I am started to get really excited for this film. I enjoy the original dredd film as the popcorn mess that it is. But this is the Dark Knight-ing of Dredd. I dig it.
