    Jun 22, 2009 - My new full armoured Predator costume.new pic's added pge 3 28/07/09 #1

Hi guys, don't know if I've posted in the right thread or not ( hope so ) I'm Paul from the Uk and new to this forum but not costuming or costume building. Been a huge fan of sci fi for ages now and built my first costume in 04 which was based on the original Predator. Since then I've built a few other costumes from other films and have just finished my idea of a full armoured Pred. It's taken a fair few hours, numerous fits of " jeez I've had enough! " or " Whens it gonna end? " but after blood, sweat and tears I finally completed it two weeks ago! the main armour I designed and built myself, the mask, bio, gaunts, hands, feet and shin armour were bought. I used card board templates for the over all armour design, then fibreglass matted and resined the inside and outter to give it strength. In some places I used gel coat to achieve a veiny bio organic look on some of the armour pieces, then painted with gun metal grey and aged with boot polish then finally sealed. Anyway I thought I'd share it with you guys and see what you think of it? I've put up a couple pf photo's which were taken last week and it was the first time I had ever put it on and within five mins had loads of kids and adults swarmin for pic's, jeez I was buzzin! I look forward to chattin with you guys and to read your comments or any suggestions you have that may improve my work. Thanks for lookin guys!!

Looking great, at least as good, if not better, than the fully armored Predator design in the original Aliens vs. Predator comic all those years ago.

Since you asked for suggestions, I do have one. You can see that you're wearing black Underarmor (or another brand name equivilent) under your armor. I would suggest painting it to look like Predator skin on the areas that can be seen around the joints and what not. And really, that's my ONLY suggestion for improvement, everything else is perfect!

Nice job! I love the kids on the bikes staring at you!

One thing that disheartened me when I was working on my (unfinished) costume, is the latex skin. You ducked that issue very handily!

I really like your armor design. Very cool. Makes me want a pred costume!

How about some muscle padding or something on your upper torso to add more bulk? Your arms, legs, and head are so beefed up with the armor and mask on that it really narrows out your trunk. Just a suggestion.

Great suit! Aside from Vader, I think Preds are the most awe inspiring suit out there.

Looks really good man, very convincing, it looks like you've got a good size to carry it well! I'd have to say one of the best Predator costumes I've seen... Period!

Funny to see the pic with the kid standing with his bike, you can just imagine him saying... WHOA! What Da' Hell R U!

Thanks guys for the warm welcome to the forum and for the awesome comments on my Pred costume, I've taken on board the suggestions regarding the bulking of the torso section to match the rest of the costume aswell as the skin colour on the under suit and it's greatly appreciated and I'll make the changes after the weekend as the Pred and me are out at a local charity event on Saturday helpin raise funds for the families of servicemen and women killed or injured in action. I have photo's of the costume build if any one would like to see how this costume started and the changes I made to it over the months, and I made a lot! lol.

Thanks again guys for all your awesome comments it's made my day!!! I look forward to chattin with you in the future about different ideas and your own projects, as for my next costume, well I have one in mind and put it this way it's red and gold and it's awesome!!!!! say no more!

Well after a major battle of wills between me and the laptop I've managed to upload a few photo's of the Full armoured Predator build up process as a couple of guys wanted to see this thing in the making well there are a few aswell as the changes that I made to him. I lost count of how many times I sat back and looked at it and then decided I didn't like the look of something on the costume and decided to change it!!! Needless to say there was a lot of em!!! Below you'll see how the armour first took shape just by using everyday cardboard boxes as templates ( The local shop loves me!! ) then it was glassed over for strength and durability. The whole template work took over three months to finally get to the stage were I finally liked the look of the armour. If any of you guys have any questions on the build process or the finished costume, please feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to answer them. Again thanks for taking the time to look and I hope you enjoy the photo's, oh and can you spot the differences??

    Paul.

Havin spent all my money on the costume build I had to use a lycra T-shirt for the photo's. I'm now working on a partial torso that will be foam filled for muscle mass and will be painted in the Pred skin tones, so when I lift my arms people will only see the Pred's skin and not a black T-shirt, plus havin it parlty foam filled for muscle structure ( The lat area ) so it will also bulk up my top half to match the rest of the beefed up armour.

WOW! That is one awesome costume!!!

Just curious, how bearable is the heat when wearing it? Can you stay in it long, depending upon where you are at?

    Great job!

Hi Michael, thanks for the great comment. I did a charity bash at the weekend and the temperature reached above 70" I had the costume on for about two hours and I was fine, my
head was sweating slighty due to the latex mask but all in all it was fantastic to wear with no major problems! I've now upgraded the bio with a hose system connected to a 2 litre water bottle that is hidden in the med pac in a small cooler, this will enable me to drink from as and when required. So all being well when I go to the London film and comic con here in the UK in July I should be real comfy!!
