My first cosplay, Malfatto (Assassins Creed Doctor)

Hey guys,

I've been working on my first cosplay attempt which I intend to wear for Halloween. I'm doing Malfatto from Assassins Creed (http://www.antoinerol.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Doctor_Malfato_rough1.jpg).

I have started by sculpting the mask which I'll cast out of resin and paint. This is also my first time sculpting anything big like this. I just sculpted some small skulls for another project, but that's it for my sculpting experience so any tips you have would be great.

Here's my progress so far:

while i have no experience in sculpting to be able to contribute any worthy insight, i think its looking amazing really looking forward to seeing it when you finish it. may i ask what materials you are using for sculpting since im really interested in exploring that possibility for making my first "elaborate" costume, and im looking for the best alternatives given the limited tools i have access to.

Well I don't have much, just some really basic things. I am using some non-hardening sulfur free clay that I've had laying around for years (got it from Michaels) a styrofoam head from Sally Beauty (with the base to mount it to my table), and a VERY basic clay sculpting tool kit with about 6 tools (Michaels again) that I originally got for carving pumpkins. I don't know what I'm doing so I'm sure there is lot's of room for improvement in what I should be using that the vets can share, but this seems to be working :)

One thing that I will let you know that I didn't expect that I am just learning is that while the clay and tools for sculpting are fairly cheap, the supplies to make your mold when you're done are quite expensive. I'm guessing the silicone for the mold and plastic to cast this mask will end up costing me $100+ :/

Finally done getting the mask roughed out. Still need to make some corrections on the beak, smooth it and add some fine details.

Just finished sculpting the mask, now I just need to smooth the clay out and mold it :) What do you guys think?

Good job!
Smart putting in a support for that...beak?
What kind of clay were you using? Water based air dry clay, or oil based clay?

I used some wire as support for the beak, and I'm using I think it's called plastine clay. It's sulfur free and never dries or hardens so I could just keep working on it without worrying about it drying up or shrinking.

I ran into a lot of trouble making the mold because I did it wrong. However the mask is done now so here's some pics of the progress that I haven't been posting lol

I thought I should do this with a giant block mold, big mistake that ended up costing about $320 to make this beast

It worked though... eventually

Took me three tries to get the mask to release from the mold without breaking, but third time is the charm :)

Trimmed and cleaned up the mask with the dremel and test mounted the lenses

Smoothing the mask out with bondo, the edges turned out rough, I should have used some finishing putty.

Painted, without clear coat

I'm missing a couple straps still which I'm waiting until next time I wear it to make them, but pretty much done :)

Just spotted this, awesome work, looks really good. Loving the mask :) I've never cosplayed yet but maybe some day, love the Creed games although playing Black Flag at the moment and much less impressed with it than previous Creeds, bring back Ezio lol. :D:thumbsup

Loooove this, I wanted to make this mask for ages, never got around to it :/ You need a nice big syringe with this :D maybe some poison pots.

The syringe is one of the items I have to make still, ran out of time before Halloween. There is a con in January that I'd like to finish this for but I just lost my job so the budget isn't there. Hopefully I'll have a new one in a week or two and can finish. :)

Anyways left to make for the con are:

straps around my sides (4)
Hat
Gloves
Belt with 2 pouches and another display pouch for poison vials
Poison vials (7 of them I believe)
Syringe filled with poison
Dagger
Paint medical symbols on the shoulder armor
Embroidery medical symbols on the chest and back
