    Apr 29, 2012 - My Deadmau5 heads, v2.0 finished! #1

Hey everyone, just wanted to get peoples opinions on my deadmau5 head replica, ive done a lot of learning on the way from building this and have made a few mistakes due to trying to rush the project.

also does anyone know how to hide seams in felt? any help would be greatly appreciated

Have got some yeah most are on my fb prop page which you can get to on my signature but ill also post up some now. I started off with modrock plaster strips because buying acryclics domes in the correct size in the uk is super expensive if there are any questions on how i made different parts feel free to ask

That's pure genius! I love how round the head is, wouldn't have thought this would work from a beach ball. Any tips for covering the ball? I'll probably go with fibreglass because I've got some left. I noticed you're working on a fibreglass version. Are you going to go with the expanding foam again or are there any significant drawbacks? The expanding foam looks like it makes mounting padding/support much easier.

As for the seams, you might want to ask some of the other mau5 head makers (Richmau5 comes to mind) directly, per PM. Most people are willing to help, they probably just haven't read the thread. There's also a tutorial here, which addresses the seam problem.

thanks for the link! yes I do have some advice actually, If youre using a beach ball and fibreglass COVER THE BALL IN MODROCK OR PAPERMACHE FIRST. I didnt do this and the resin warped the plastic that the beach ball was made of also I would suggest marking out the size of the neck hole and the area you want to cut the mouth opening as to not waste fibreglass and make sure its very strong around the mouth opening and neck opening, I have about 4-5 layers of fibreglass around the mouth opening so that it doesnt break easily Im not using expanding foam this time, It was a pain to carve out and makes the inside crumbly and ugly, also made mounting the ears to be removable very difficult it does however add a lot to the durablilty of the piece because it supports the shell, this time intead im going for a thin layer of silicone sealer on the inside just to make it look nice and get rid of the fibreglass smell

oh yeah and my final tip is when buying a beach ball, when it says 14" it doesnt mean diameter, i found the 20" beach balls to be the correct size, they come to about 14" diameter

    thanks man

btw the deadmau5 2.0 is now finished!

main changes are, its slightly bigger this time (made to fit any noggin size now) and it just wayy more convenient to ship, move around in it and use because it now has strapping to hold all batteries inside and battery packs, ears now come off for shipping and for storage, much more space inside etc

    pretty happy with it
