Muv Luv Alternative Bodysuit Cosplay

In case you guys, don't know what Muv Luv Alternative is, it's just an anime where Humans vs Aliens but with PTSD and gore.

Moving on, I plan on making one of the pilot body suit they use when they get in their mecha.

Looks like this (see attachment)

It would be wise to say that it is my first time making something with armor so I will be needing help if anyone has any to offer.
Additional details: Male, live in Canada (sure helps with where I could possibly get the materials and tools) also no sewing machine.

My limit is until May 2015. So I do have some time to work and do some test runs to make it nice looking.

Subscribed. Greetings, probably-the-only-other-person-who-knows-what-this is! I've been pondering making an Armored Suit for awhile (easier than a TSF, at least). My plan was to buy a base body suit - even a Morph Suit should be fine - and build the rest of the armor with Worbla and foam. Though, the suit probably would be best printed with the pattern - might have to design and print it like people do for Spider-Man suits. I'll put a bit more thought into it and maybe give a pattern a shot over the weekend... good luck!
 
So then where would I have to get custom printed morphsuits? Like I said, this is entirely new world for me so having some sort of directions for materials and stuff would be helpful.
I originally thought of just going with a TSF ever since I saw that Gundam RX-78-2 thread, but that might be too out of reach for me.
 
TSFs would be easier if we could get our hands on the TSF Forefront model files - ah well. Maybe if I find a 3D scanner to borrow for one of my kits one of these days. At least the assault cannons and PB blades wouldn't be terrible to do.
So, a quick look through some Spider-Man threads suggests theres a few places that print custom fabric, but I don't have any idea how to make the patterns. Anybody wanna chime in on that one? I did read somebody suggest a place called 'zentaizone.com' as someone that takes custom orders for bodysuits, but they also said it was like $200 for a custom one 0.o
Well, I shot them an email anyway, so we'll see. No luck on pattern yet, I got distracted trying to get the hand armor to work nicely - I'll keep you posted if I work anything out.
 
Sweet. Thanks for the help and wish you the best of luck for the hand armor. It looks like a pain to do, and will be a pain to make it work.
 
Ok, I passed the pics along - I used the MLA UN suit like Takeru's suit, I assumed from your reference pics that's the one you were looking for. They should get back to me probably by Monday. I'm pretty confident I can knock some test pieces out by then too. I'm still not sure if foam over or under the suit would be better...
Still, if this works, it'd be sweet if there was any way to get other Muv Luv cosplayers together - I know there were a bunch at AX '12 when everybody was there, but its pretty rare to see anyone otherwise
 
They're quick! Since they can't do armor, they didn't want to do an '80%' design for me. As much of a pain as that is, I totally appreciate that - no wonder people go to them for stuff! I told them I'd try to give them a design without the armor.....lets see how my Illustrator skills are, eep 0.o
Otherwise, I'm thinking just painting over a base black or grey suit and gluing foam bits to it.
 
I think the armor can be just velcro'd on or made with foam and attached seperately. But thanks for the quick reply! Going to be really useful for the future.
 
nice. finally.. Also a fan of Muv luv universe here.. (alternative and unlimited).
I think you need a sintra spandex for it.. and eva foam for detail armor pads.
currently there are no available files for it and currently doing a practice run 3ding for the TSF.
lastly.. Subscribed. :D
 
Sorry guys, I've been sick like all week - my initial design didn't come out very good, I'll try again this weekend. I do think it'll look ok if we're stuck having to add the details to a base black bodysuit, but I'd prefer to have that nice clean look. I'll post it up here for feedback before I send it to Zentaizone
 
Aetherdeus, has there been any update? I've been busy with work these days to even think about making the suit or armor parts.
 
Hey guys - sorry, I've been swamped at work. I did manage to get a little bit done - what do you think of this?

Everything not colored would be black - its extremely simplified and it doesn't have the green bands or any of the smaller details either. I figure those will all be armor pieces using the purple torso areas as guides, but I can clean it up a little, too. Hm, there are a few errors, I can clean that up - its my first try at making a design like this, no idea if I'm even doing it right...a decent start, though. Oh, here's a super-crude glove shape in foam, too:

It might not be as uncomfortable as I thought it might be, even if you make all the plates one solid piece.
 
That actually looks pretty damn nice. The suit that is. As for the glove, it looks a bit rough since it probably is really rough but with proper forms and stuff, it could turn out really well. Damn.
 
Thanks! Ok, I'll clean up the suit design a little (tweaking a few nodes & adding the green) and send if off - I still expect they'll want $200-ish, but might be worth the trouble.
Haha, that hand did come out pretty bad - I'll put some actual work into it, don't worry. I'm just glad I can still maintain some dexterity with that design, yeesh.

2000x2000 should be plenty to get them printed on finished shoulder armor. A few clear coat & wax layers should get that translucent gloss look right, I think

They've got everything but the US Army patch or Yuuya's UN Army flight jacket patch, though I do have some lower quality images of that one - still hoping aeryn will be able to embroider that one for me. I'll get a few extras in case anybody else wants one :)

There were quite a few errors with the first one once I got to looking at it closely, but I think I might have got it with this one. What do you think?

Edit: ok, got a quick feedback that I need to tweak the arms a little so the zig-zag line is more clear, but should be otherwise ok
