    Jun 16, 2012 - Motorized Faceplate #1

I have little to no experience with electronics and would really like some help in being pointed in the direction of a good place to start learning about servos and such to motorize a faceplate for an Iron Man Helmet. All links to vidoes and websites with good info for a dummy would be appreciated and if anyone is willing to skype me one night or something that would be awesome too. Thanks a bunch!

Okay so I notice that this thread has had a total of 128 views since I created it. That means that people are really wanting to find some good information on this. So far this link is the only thing that has been fruitful.

I may be new, but this is my promise to all the Iron Man costuming folks out there..

I promise that if I ever come up with a solid, clean, and easy way of doing this, I WILL SHARE EVERYTHNG!!!! I don't want credit, I don't want bragging rights, and I don't want money. What I want is to empower everyone with the same knowledge so that we can really see how far we can push the limits of an Iron Man build.

If anyone out there feels the same, please post here! I don't care what you post, but just show your support for the the free information on motorized helmets!!!!

I've just started my Iron Man MK 7 project and I'm intending to do updates on my thread as I go... I am going to try doing a motorized faceplate and if I can do it I'll post on here how I've done it. You should check out XRobots.co.uk for some awesome tutorials on how to do it!!

This is my first attempt at one of these but I'm feeling kinda optimistic and excited to see where it takes me!! I'm going for a fibre glassed pep helmet and then foam for the rest.

http://www.therpf.com/f24/iron-man-helmet-150047/ check out what i did i havnt moterised it yet but my hinge is the simplest thing ive seen. just buy a mechano set and make the hinges out of that. and it will be very easy to just stick pieces on for a servo

I don't know much about servos but if you look around this persons thread you can find some information http://www.therpf.com/f24/iron-man-m...dboard-143561/

Also this website Pololu Robotics and Electronics is a place to buy servos and their components. It also has a forum.

That last link is great! I'm on track right now to finish my first helmet foam build by early next week. I will have picks of that build to, depending on how it turns out. Might have sizing issues, so may have to rebuild. regardless, as soon as I finish my first foam build, I'm going to start a rotocast and perfect my overall design and then work on this. that means in hopefully a month or two I will have all the information that will get people started with their own helmet. that's if xrobots or some the others around here don't beat me to it. thanks

As a senior member I suggest that you first browse a few pages of the main forums, then hit the search engine with a few different search terms before starting a thread. Both of the questions in your threads have been answered several times here on the forum, and at least once each within the last week.

Naboo is right. There are a lot of methods contained with the iron man threads on the forum. The problem with having a universal system or every helmet is that it doesn't quite scale properly for all the different helmets out there.
I have ended up using my own system because after trying similar systems to other peoples, with much frustration, they just wouldn't work quite right with my helm.
I'll be posting pics and a video when I've got my system fully sorted but whether it will work for anybody else is another matter.

I'm not trying to be rude or arrogant or anything like that, I'm just pointing out what I have seen. I may be a new member to this forum but I have been trying to figure this out for long time, as in the last four years.I'm extremely frustrated at the lack of help I've seen from a few people and even when I click on youtube links, other costumers have made people take vids down do to "copyright infringement". I'm just simply showing that there a lot of videos with people showing their final product, but literally few to none showing how anything is set up or how to make it work. Just a simple tutorial on the basics of a servo would be great.

I feel like, even if one system doesn't work for everyone at least seeing one build might spark more creativity in others. I want this topic to be a topic full of information, just like painting foam, and creating pep files is. That is all. I don't mean disrespect towards anyone. I just want to help others (that like myself have little to no experience with foam and electronics) make a dream helmet come true. Sorry if this thread seems repetitive, but I have already found it helpful because now there are links to multiple threads about this topic. Also, I feel like this threads title is a little more specific. That's why I made it. I do appreciate all the help! Thanks Again.

Thanks Hanzo. I will give you credit for any of your ideas that I use. I really want to get as much info as possible and see if I can come up with a definitive way of doing it. That way I can share with the community. Thanks Again.
