Marty McFly Orange Vest ???

Aye, Indy - I would honestly just buy everything from you and save myself the hassle - but alas - eating is so very important to me and I can scarcely do it as is.

The shirt I'm getting from this guy (i hope) : BTTF BLog - so that's covered and by no means is it a master piece or even interesting item.

The Vest is interesting though - I imagine it would still be somewhere in the $350 range for this ?

Hell what I'd really like from ya is a Rebel Without a Cause Jacket or the Leon Resident Evil 4 jacket... but again... food.

:cry

Haven't you heard of Ramen Noodles? ;)

Yeah, the vest would likely be around $350.

Kind regards,
Indy

Haha - my mother would love to hear you say that ! She's all about the Ramen.

But some day Indy - some day I'm gonna deck out my whole wardrobe in your merchandise. So don't go anywhere !

isn't the jacket a jordache? I found a close enough shirt once but it was long sleeve. When I dressed as that Marty for a 50's theme party once, I just got a white vest and dyed it.

Not to pull away from the point of this thread but I wanted you all to see the thrift store version of this costume I threw together for an 80's party at the bar I was working at 3 years ago.

The vest was a red woman's jacket that I removed the sleeves from, tried to sew shut super quick and failed as you can see so there where feathers flying every where I also sewed in the lines across it to give it the puffy sections it needed. The jean jacket was also a woman's jacket. The shirt and pants I found in the men's section. I brought the jeans to work and acid (or Bleach) washed the there and let them dry all afternoon before the party that night.

Good luck in your search I will be watching this closely.

Great outfit!

That's the problem I have with costuming this one - if I'm going to spend $750-$1,000 on an outfit, I'd rather it look expensive, as stupid as that is, something like a decent Ghostbusters getup or a 10th Doctor costume that looks impressive.

But if you did a high-end version of McFly and went to a costume party people would still presume you put it together from a thriftstore, and so I'd think the joke was kind of on me if it really cost a grand.

That said, I love Magnoli Clothiers and I do find it reassuring that they can copy pretty much anything, if you have the cash or are willing to save for it. That's a far cry from when I was a boy and owning, say, a decent question mark sweater or whatever else was just not a possibility.

ASH & DAVE both have good points.

Yes - I could just go the thrift shop route and put something together that's totally acceptable.

For me though I started this thread in pursuit of the knowledge ( if it's out there ) of what brand or make - Marty McFly's vest actually was in the movie. I could theoretically get it made - which would be much easier - but that defeats the purpose.

Hell if someone could track down the exact make of his button up shirt - a generic checkered shirt - then I'm confident the knowledge of his Orange vest could be out there !

The things I stress over :wacko

A small update - but I've been doing some e-mailing and the response I'm getting is that it may have been a vintage (obviously) Northface.

That's all I got

Another update.

Got a Vintage Down Vest Pattern Off Ebay. I may just whip this up as opposed to buying the gorram thing.

I just need to figure out now what fabric to go with.

Any thoughts ?

Bumping this thread to see if anyone else has any input about the colour of the vest, or if anyone's currently selling copies of the shirt...

I'm pretty convinced that the vest he wore was a vintage north face one, i recently purchased one on fleabay thats from the late 70s. It has the same pocket stitching and buttons and correct amount of ummm puffs? i guess that what you could call them. I'll upload pictures once I receive it. it's colour is red but if you look at the scenes that are from the 1985 sections of the film, you'll see it comes out red on film and during the 1955 sequences it shows as a burnt orange, mainly due the filters they used to make the scenes have a warm 50s feel to them.

Thanks for the tips mate - and yeah the pockets are what make it such a ***** to nail - I've been through hundreds of these ebay listings over the years and can never find anything that looks 100%

And i'm also becoming 100% convinced that the vest is a burnt orange - if you look at any screen caps of the jacket next to a pure red (flags a.k.a. Re-elect Red Thomas) the jacket stands out as being a totally different hue.

Here's 2 examples of the jacket pocket:

Now here's an example of color - notice the flag on the left side of the screen as compared to Marty's Vest. If the vest is indeed red then it is faded and they must of used a light tungsten filter or something. But here's the comparison pic:

I've always thought the vest was burnt orange. And long before I became such a big fan I never would have guessed anyone would debate on the colour. Even when you think of the classic line "What'd you jump ship? What's with the life preserver?" Most life preservers in the 80s were a burnt orange colour. Even the BTTF 2 jacket similar to the one in my display pic has a slight "orange" hue. Then again for all I know we could be WAY off on the colour. It could be a combination of the studio lighting and the camera's lens that results in debatable colour tones. For example... my special fx/ainmatronic's teacher said that the real Robo Cop costume is actually purple when you see it in person, but it doesn't look that way on camera.

One night, I casually decided to check what kind of jean jacket and vest Marty McFly actually wore in Back to the Future and now I've been sucked into the quest. :)

The Universal Studios Costume Department apparently rents costumes for student films and commercials. I was just watching a video and noticed something at the 26 second mark: Universal Studios Costume Department Tour - YouTube

It can't be that easy, can it?

I called the Universal Studios Costume Department today. They sounded really busy and didn't have a lot of time to talk... the first two times I called. After a while, I got ahold of someone who said that they could put together a costume for me. I clarified that I don't want to rent a costume or even try to make one, but I'm just genuinely interested in cataloging information about the costume. She's running it up to her boss who is in touch with the Archives group. They took my name and phone number, so hopefully I'll hear back.

Studios have original screen used costumes for hire to everyone? Serious? What is the catch?
