    Mar 18, 2009 - Lens smoking question #1

I'm planning to use large round sunglasses lenses as pupils for a character mask I'm working on. The problem is they're too transparent and I need to get them as dark as possible and still be visible through? Is there a special type of spray paint or technique I can use to do this?

    Thanks in advance, guys!

Well, I don't know if you're just wanting them foggy, but if you want them dark you can just bring them to an optometrist and have them tinted. I had a pair tinted black one time, they were completely blacked out, even when you held them to the sun you couldn't see my eyes through them. Still could see through them though when I wore them.

I have read (here) that you can use RIT dye to tint lenses. I haven't done this myself yet, but I am going to really soon. I think I've read that this method is preferred over tint spray, as it's harder to see out of the lenses after you spray them.

Maybe I should go ahead and tint my lenses and let you know how it worked out for me.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys!

Hey Rusty...did you bring your lenses to a special optometry place? Or was it a Lenscrafters or something? I'll make a few calls but I think I have this sorted out now. Thanks again!

Well, in my 3 year long journey to duplicate the X-Men Cyclops lenses I made countless trips to the optometrist. There's an optometrist where I am locally, but the place isn't a chain, and has an on-site lab. I know most places can do simple things like that though. Lenscrafters shouldn't have any problem with it. I know they don't like cutting lenses though, or at least the one here. Oh, and Walmart does it too in the Optical Place. That's where I got my other ones done.
