JFcustom's FOAM files

My 7 year old son has asked me if I can build him a Deathstroke costume. Not being one to disappoint, I told him I would. Of course, I have absolutely no idea where to start, so stumbled across this thread. I haven't read it all yet, but I plan to.

Out of interest, what do people think it is costing them to build a full costume out of foam?

Hi!

I am also building a deathstroke set, but probably a lot larger than your son (so scale down the cost) so far for the foam armor I have spent probably about $40 on foam (lots of left overs) and $30 on strapping materials (bought a lot extra) , this is with several mistakes and several pieces that I needed to restart completely. this is also not taking into consideration paint which I am still determining. Hope this will help get you a base idea of the cost,

If you don't own all the tools (glue gun, shop knives, sanding tools, etc) for a child's sized full armor set, I'd say you're looking at just under $100 out the door for a fully finished armor.

If you do own tools already, you can pick up enough foam from Harbor freight or Hobby Lobby for less than $20, and paint/finishing supplies will run you another $15 for a PVA glue finish or $30 if you go the Plasti-dip route.
Plan on $15 in nylon strapping/buckles or Velcro.

Everything else you could possibly need on the first one you'll find laying around your house.

Costuming is just another word for necessity, and it is the mother of invention.

Is there a tutorial on.converting files to foam? I got some models I'm working on but I would like to make a pep.in.foam only. I don't want anyone to do them for me, I want to learn how to pep.then.for foam..hope someone can help. i know this is a bit rough but i wanted to unfold this for foam but its not working for me tmnthead.jpg

Looks just a little high poly there tbh. Um what program did you use to make that model or did you find it?

I.found the model on a free site I have the makers information. I have a few models I have made myself but wanted to start with this one to learn how to convert in foam.

Well I was wondering because if you made that model, they made the resolution a little high that looks like cg level of detail. And unfolding that (what I think you mean by converting) for foam is possible but, making it would be almost impossible because at that resolution every little piece would be like a mm wide o_O you know what I mean? :)

Yeah I do. Darn it was hoping it would be able to convert it. I may have to model it myself then

Umm maybe if you threw it into a modeling program You could manually delete some of the edge loops (like say three lines for every one) you could make it low poly enough to make it work :)

It can be used for a foam unfold at that level of definition, if the parameters in Pepakura are set properly. If you post the .obj or .pdo somewhere, I'll take a look at it this afternoon.

I can email it to you if you want

G'day mate, I see you have stated that all male suits are scaled for a 6' tall guy. In your Robo files, you have a Sharkhead7854 Ironman Helmet foam unfold. What scale is that default? Would it fit the average 6' tall guy as well or does it need to be scaled?

SB.

PS, thank you VERY much for your tips, advice and work on this thread. It has made my second build soooooo easy!

Is it possible to unfold a model which has a high polygon count? I have looked at some of the files in the first post and panel that are curved are often made from one or few pieces. When I try to unfold mine, I get thousands of minuscules pieces even when some large surfaces are barely curved at all.

Hey JF I just have to say you're truly a god among men! Just wanted to show you what your files helped me accomplish. :p

This was from halloween this past year:
