Jul 17, 2012 - Jack Sparrow better late than never #1

Wanted first to say hi to all on the site.

I am in the process of putting a Jack Sparrow costume together ( awe/dmc ) version. I'm in the UK so most of my stuff that I have so far or is on order is coming from the states.

    So far I have :

ACME tricorn, that came pr-distressed. I have also added some of my own with some colour touches.

A Paulette shirt is on way.

    Yourdreem vest. also ordered.

I have my sash which i've distressed and tea stained which has come out great. Its the more the OST pattern but will do.

Bandana. Which I have bleached and have stained it with everything from wine, tea and even ribena lol. It's almost looking spot on. Another red wine bath will do it.

I have a wig which ive added coins to and ties. ( Not totally screen accurate) This wig will become the one I wear at children's parties. I will order a yordreem wig soon too.

I had an idea of making my own wig too and instead of it being screen accurate make it more personal to me as I have recently found small trinkets, and things i have collected from my youth which I thought would be nice to tie into a more personal wig.

I have a plastic compass which is good enough as a belt prop.

The rings which will need making smaller to fit fingers. Master replicas. Was surprised at the quality was expecting plastic rubbish with no weight.

For the pants I am using a pair of old trousers which have an old look about them and the colour is fine too. these are not drop breeches but will work for now until I update them to something more accurate later. So much of them are covered with vest and sash so im not that in a hurry to change them.

I have already got a mermaid charm which is in a similar pose to the screen one. It is a real netsuke mermaid wood charm probs a little bigger than the screen one but will work for me.

Beard strands, which will need altering as the way they have been put together makes them a little too wide for my chin. I think i will glue the tops for security and cut the tops off and then will glue them into my own beard which will give them a more realistic look anyway.

So I have left to get:

    Belts and Baldric
    Frock Coat.
    chicken foot and snake bones
    pelts
and those boots of his that will either hit my wallet big time if I have to buy the caboots ones, or I try and get a similar shaped faux leather pair in the UK and recover in suede.

For the wig I already have I need to get the bone needle too.

I know many other threads of Jack sparrow costumes have been on before and many of the costume makers post in here so if anyone has pieces left or can give me some help sourcing my remaining bits would be a great help. Especially if anyone knows of people in the UK that make any screen accurate pieces.
Postage from the states racks up the costs for me especially if customs intercept, them which they love to do.

Next will be an OST version

Love the forum, also if any members know of some good costume conventions to go to please let me know.

    Regards
    Iain

Found a buckle and leather store today near where I live that has supplied movies with many leather pieces and buckles. They told me they did infact make some for the potc movies. How true this is I don't know. was put onto them by my business adviser who happened to have known them.

Purchased two Anamarie Buckles which are made of old brass.

Also got two belt blanks and leather scraps to make a palm glove too.

So I have also ordered a sun buckle too, from Simon and I'm going to make my own belts.

The Baldric I will have buy I think. Im not really bothered about the patterned leather version as in the movie it is so weathered and fine that it hardly shows up really. Most of the ones I have seen that you can buy really stand out a little too much for me. So as long as the leather is the right colour and the baldric pins matches about right that will do.

The shop also had two pieces of suede the exact colour I need for boots, which I was so tempted to buy, but I need a pattern making first to make sure the sizes are big enough.

My shirt arrived today, needs running through the wash a few times soften it up to get rid of the new feel.

The vest is going to take a good few weeks to get done as they have a long waiting list.

Will post some pics soon once I start putting the belts together.

Ive found a LARP online store that make replica cutlass and flintlock that are well priced. UK based too. The flintlock can fire red plastic toy caps so can create a little bang and a puff of smoke. I can alter its colour to better match the movie version. Can post links if anyone's interested or just PM me.

    regards to all
