Iron Man - What If? Civil War
Hey guys,
After about 2 months of pepping and building, here is the result of my first attempt at an Iron Man costume. I wore this for a bit at Comic Con San Diego, and people seemed to like it. I was definitely more of a challenge to wear than I expected. I was kind of rushed making it, and especially while trying to make it wearable. I was surprised so many people wanted photos! After wandering around downtown and waiting in line for my badge, I was too disgruntled to keep my helmet on for long, and I felt bad that I couldn't keep posing for people. I apologize if you happened to run into me and I was grumpy Anyway, I wanted to share my project. Thanks for all the inspiration and resources! -AK |

That's awesome, sir!
But I believe you made the 'vibranium armor' version instead of the What If? Civil War version. I only say that because you look exactly like the figure I have sitting on my computer desk. >.< Regardless it's awesome to see something different. |

Keeping it together and wearable is the biggest challenge, partially because all other aspects of making the suit are chronicalled pretty well here and partially (for me, at least) because that's the part that suffered due to my time crunch. I used plastic buckles like you find on backpacks to attach the chest and back to each other. Also on the codpiece since it was too small just to slip on. The joints of the arms and legs were all rivetted together so they'd be strongly attached but also articulate (they kind of articulated! ) I only had time to figure out how to attach part on the ab plate, so the front part is velcro'd to the chest. And then lacking an better option in the day or 2 I had left after building, hardening and painting (it was down to the wire!) I wore suspenders under the whole thing that attached to the top of the thigh pieces to hold the legs up. I hope that helps! I will also say this: I used the files from Robo's thread (for which I'm extremely grateful! ). I think they're designed for someone 6' tall. I'm 5'11 if I stand up straight and quite thin, so everything, save for the codpiece, was slightly big and bulky on me. I don't know a lot about scaling, but next time I may try to shave it down like 5%? Good luck! |

Re: Iron Man - What If? Civil War
Great build man, I am also doing my first pep IM project and using robos files as well. I hope that with all the information i am gathering along the way that when it comes time to wear it that i figure out the most efficient way to attach it, keep pieces in place and wear it. Anyways thanks for posting your project gives us first timers hope that we can finish lol.

Re: Iron Man - What If? Civil War
I should point out that this build has hardened almost exclusively with smooth-on 321 with minimal bondo on parts of the helm and chest. I didn't have a power sander so everything was done by hand or with a dremmel and lots of jury rigging. And then spray paint. This was mostly due to time and money constraints and learning as I went how to handle the next project. Anyway, for what it's worth, this is what you can expect to get from that minimal amount of finishing work. There are some truly brilliant suits displayed on this forum, and they are definite something I hope to aspire to in future projects! Cheers!
