Jul 9, 2012 - Iron Man Foam Build WIP #1

    Hey,

So I've been building me a suit! going pretty well, I will coat it with that white "wood" glue and then cover and sand it with a flexible "bondo" like stuff I found on amazon, its supposed to allow flexibility and not crack.

I want to buy some stuff for my costume that I don`t have the Time, Patience or Skills to do as i would like it, could you recomend me some members with a good reputation and reasonable prices for the following?

    Helmet, raw resin cast
    Arc reactor (Unibeam), Hand propulsores
    Gauntlets and Boots

and if there is anyone selling a ready to install, programmed electronic hinge kit maybe?

I have my own Idea for the eyes, "Glospex sunglases", those are supposed to emit light and still be see-through. Google them, for 20 bucks worth a try!

    Much Appreciated!

What I did for the arc reactor was I bought two PVC sections (about a buck each) of 3' and 4'. I put the smaller one inside of the 4' and then just filled it with hot glue. That creates the ring, and then wrapped it with copper wire. It has an amazing effect when you put LED lights underneath it!

thanks! I dunno, I might just buy the reactor.. yeah I think Foam is the best for a quick build, there are several methods out there to get a smooth surface just as good as pep and bondo, I think I would have no patience to do a fiber glas build.. have to hurry up though, helloween is just a couple months!

Looks great for a foam build. O_o I'm not sure if you meant for this to happen, but that blue foam actually makes it look pretty awesome.

Can you link us to that flexible Bondo-like stuff you found on Amazon? Or at least give the search terms. :P

nah, its just because i run out of the same foam color but yeah it does look cool i think, I will paint it red anyway to keep it traditional :P

Its from Auto-K "Elastischer Fόllspachtel" translates to "elastic filler" its sandable and flexible, I dont know if its available outside Germany though.. worth a try, I will post the results in a couple weeks!

Awesome. Thanks for the info, I'll look into it.

So I'm working on Darkside's Mark VII files and I was curious, did you use the Mark VI brace, or was it customized for the Mark VII?

Wow that is pretty cool. I've only messed with foam a little bit, but wow great work. I like the blue effect as well... you could make it a new model with the white are glowing from El wire. Dude you might be on to something.

Good build. I have yet to find time and more funds to play around with foam.

@darmessiah, I used a Mark VI brace as a Pep file, and used it as a foam template, the brace was missing somehow from the Foam build.

@teranmx, thanks! I kinda like the blue and white too.. but I'll stick to the red and gold for my first one, maybe later I'll do the "Iron Patriot" with those colors :P

Foam build is actually pretty cheap, 6-8Euros for a yoga matt, I've used 4 so far, and gluesticks worth 10 euro or so. I think the Paintjob is going to be expensive..

I bought a roll of anti-fatigue 7mm foam from Sears here in the States for $25, and it's doing pretty well.

I actually thought about doing an Iron Patriot myself. Since there's no Pep templates for it, I was gonna trace out a chest template using the Mark VII, except make the star shape in the middle. It would kind of cut on the detail a little bit, but I can add on to it. Customization for the win.
