    Apr 2, 2008 - Iron Man COSTUME : New pictures page 8 #1

Well thought I would show off how my own Iron man project is coming along. Geting there and starting to look like something at long last. Going to shoot for getting some paint on the completed parts next week.

No where near the quality of the TMP armor, in fact if you look at the photos you will see I used some pictures of TMPs armor early on to get an idea on what the hell I wanted to do. The suit is cast in fiberglass and ruber. All areas you see on the gold body suit will be covered in ruber sections, note the abb area and neck seal. The only kind of neat thing is that the suit will have 1 functional arm. Will have a compartment on the back of the right forearm that will raise up to look like it is shooting off a missle. Just a static prop non functional. Think a real missle would land me in jail so ...LOL ! Note, no it does not fly.

The electronics for raising the missle platform are only 1 way, so once the arm opens up it has to be closed manualy to relatch and rearm the misle to raise again. I could not get enough juice or space in the arm for another set of switchs. As is I have to add power from the central battery pack on my chest. This powers the central light, voice amp ( not pictured) and will also power the light scource for my helmets eyes. Each hand will have a light ( repulser ) built into the hand part of the gauntlet. I am sure therewas an easier way to do this, but was the only way I could think to do it, plus I had most of the materials on hand.

The arm structure with the missle will be fitted into the forearm after it has been painted up. The red rigs at my elbow area, is similar to what I am using for open areas on the inside and back of arm and the same for the legs. It is also the color of what the armor will be, or very close to it. The power cable running down my arm will be hidden in the arm and chest, only visable under the arm pit. Each arm will have 3 power cables, but only the right arm will be for functionality, the rest as finnishing touches. The chest light, battery and voice amp will be enclsed into the back of the chest armor.

For anyone looking at the helmet and recognising it, that is a "Weaslflinger" helm, from off the boards here. Was not up to the task of trying to fabricate the helmet at this point. The gent helping me on this project may tackle that at some point.

Note the groin & butt armor is still being made up, as is the finishing stages of the hand Gauntlets. The legs and feet are about 90 % complete.

Hope you like some of the pictures. Note I added a few still from the movie for example of the arm structure

Special thanks to TMP. Had I not saw his photos on line, and seeing that it was possible to do this, this project would never have been attempted. Also had Weaslflinger not made such fantastic helmets I also dont know if this would have happend. So I take my hat off to both these 2 guys as a huge inspiration to get this project off the ground. Thank you Gents.

Let me know what you think RPF'ers

EDIT: the rope around my middle is just to keep the ruber section in place to check the fitting. Also the suit is in primer only, not the paint color

Thanks for some nice feedback from the TMP Crew.
I love the progress of this suit and i LOVE the idea of the electronics.
    That is so sweeeeeet

    Keep it up.

BTW.. I noticed the pistons on the neck. does that not interfear with your helmet? If you angle them inwards in the sculpt so its wide at bottow and smaller and thinner on top the helmet will easily slide over.

    Example portraying the neck ...

    Before : IINeckII

    After: /INeckI\

    Thanks guys.

TMP. On the neck pistons, the picture does not show it well but when it is on my neck it tapers inwards. So wider at the bottom of my neck and then gets smaller as it gets closer to the top. So easy to turn my neck and bend it ect. It has to fit snug, but not uncomfortably so. Not unlike the feeling of wearing a stormtrooper neck seal, very similar to that.

The other helmet I am getting, I have a more streamlined neck seal that does not have the pistons on it. I am also redoing the back of the armor as well to make the suit a bit more streamlined and less bulky. This armor as it was starting to take shape became a somewhat Civil War / Slight movie version. Wit hthe other things working on , ie the back andsome changes to the legs it will look more along the line of the movie version......hopefully....

What is up with all these outstanding Iron Man costumes? Wow! This is yet another great costume. I also love the rubber additions and how you're handling the overall outfit.
    Wow...great stuff by all.
I noticed your nod to TMP and I think both you guys are just leading the way with this stuff. You should hold your head high as this project is as ambitious as they get and your results so far are just beautiful.
    Great work man...honestly, great work!

Thanks guys, means a lot to hear the comments, it makes the hard work and expenditure seem all the more worth it, when your peers give you the nod.

Should have everything complete and painted by the 18th. Boots are done, groin and butt just pulled from the molds, painting the bulk of the suit next week. Just need to do the final finish on the hands, made a few slight changes since starting them. Had them all done up in ruber but now trying a glassfibre palm and back of hand. May eventually be able to do all the fingers in gasfiber as well. Just might not have that version of the hands ready for the premier, but likly by time of Dragon Con.

More pictures likly late next week. And thanks again guys !

Travis had a chance to do up some test pieces for paint. Also did a test on a piece of junk ruber material to se how it looks. So far so good, will post up some pictures of a painted ruber section along with other stuff later this week.

Paint color looks good, this is after 2 coats of clear coat gloss on top. Going to go with 4 coats to help protect it up, again so far so good.

Pictures are of 1 forearm, 1 shoulder bell, 2 shoulder bells and the 2 bicep sections. Note gold will be applied to the right areas after all the red has been painted.

    More pictures in a bit

That's an incredible job you're doing on that suit. Iron man is my favorite character. Although I do prefer the classic red and gold suit. That red is the perfect color though.

Makes me think about trying to make the classic suit if I ever have the time. Nice work.

Thanks Guys, should have a few more pics up late tomorow of a lot more of the finished parts and maybe an almost complete test fit. Last thing is a partial redo on the gauntlets to make them a bit more sturdy. More time consuming than anything. I also admit I am kinda doing 40 things at the same time as I am getting excited about getting this done now that it is looking more like it should.

I know there is a gent on here who did make the classic red and gold armor, I think the uper legs and uper arms were body suit. But everything esle including the helmet was Vac formed abs. Was a nice kit. I forget his name but if you bear with me I will see if I can hunt down his Avatar on here. I can send you a pk as to who he is so you can contact him. Or maybe he will see this post and send a note off to you ?

    Thanks again guys !

Id LOVE to know the process of making the rubber components, I am currently making an armour which I would like to have in rubber, to flex and for safety.
Are you using a Smoothon compound?
BTW, Totally awsome.........Im loving the arm internals too!

TK1780, I saw the suit you are talking about. It was nice but the parts seemed a little big to me. There was something about it that just didn't look right to me. I'm not saying it wasn't nice, just not for me.

Maybe it's the design of the old suit that makes it hard to do right and look good. Possibly because of the movie, these suits will look better because we have now sen them in real life. I don't know. Maybe the old style suit is better for a mannequin and not to be worn.

Keep at it though. I can't wait to see it finished.

TMP. I dont have any parts that are in ABS, so on that I am lucky. The paint for the ruber is a coumpound that my buddy Travis is doing. I have never painted ruber with any success, but this is his speciality ( thank God) But yah this project I dont have anything on the suit that is in ABS, silicone and glassfibre only.

The test pieces on the ruber / silcone came out great and we are painting the actual ruber sections up tonite, so will post some pictures ofthat with a piece of the glassfibre painted armor for comparrison. So far it looks 95% to the glass fibre red, it is such a small differnece you have to really look to notice any differnce in color. It comes out looking like it is a little darker, but agian you have to look to see that it is differnt. If a person did not know they would not have any idea it was to differnt types of paint or that it was ruber and glassfibre. Still has a nice shine to it, same as the armor.

More pics on that soon my friend

The ruber is just a silicone compound done up heavy, as in thick, but no it is not smoothon. Also I would not want to make a whole suit out of it as it would way a ton. My ruber components are twce as heavy as the glassfibre. I think if you are considering doing a whole suit, then going the route of the bat man guys in latex might be an option ? But all in ruber like the movie Iron Man stunt suits ?? I know there is a way to do it, but not the way I did it. It would weight a ton.

Alexis, I have to give TMP credit, as well as Weaslflinger. I wanted to do this project, but you think I could find a decent photo to save myself of the armor ?? And Stan Winston was not returning my phone calls asking to borrow his design blueprints I am sure he was just out of town or something

Anyway, TMP had posted up pictures of his sculpts, I used a lot of his pictures as a basis for my own suit. I might have been able to do it without it, but I would have done a crap load more guessing. So he saved my bacon and did not know it Weaslflinger, with his Freaking incredible helmets made this feasable. I was not up to the task of trying to build up a helmet. So again had this not been avaliable I was sunk before starting.

I think I know what you mean, but I am sure his suit could be altered, I dont think he is a huge guy ? maybe ask him. I also think muscled up arms under the body suit would do wonders, but his pics show that suit off nice I thought ?

    Thanks again guys, means alot
