Jul 18, 2012 - Iron Man 3 Mark VIII helemt 3D print in hand #1

We have decided to produce a Mark VIII helmet now that I was able to get some very nice ref pics that show various details that are not seen on the Comic Con pictures.
My 3D guy has only had a few hours time to work on this so far but we are focusing on the highest level of accuracy with all details in mind. It is being done for 3D printing, once we are 100% happy with the final model. Here's a few early stage pictures.

LOL, yes that is why I have WIP in the title it's being worked on. There are a lot of details that are going into this that are not seen in the Con pics so it will be extremely accurate.
Here are a few pics of two of the last helmets we did just so you know the level this will be.

Sweet ! But it should cost a lot of money, no ? Last time I estimate a helmet for 3D printing it was around 600$ or so !

Considering the amount of man-hours that are spent sometimes modeling, sanding, casting, sanding, and all that extra labor that goes unaccounted for, I'd say 600 is very much more than a fair price to pay.

There will still be all of that going on. After the model has been made which consists of quite a few hours to get it accurate and correct it will be printed. Then it will be mastered , smoothed primed sectoined and preped for molding. Then cast so there is way more than $600 invested in this.

Wow, I didn't really think I liked the MK 8 that much but after seeing your model I can see a lot more Iron Man in there than any of the previous designs, go figure. Quality does cost a lot, I'm finding that out with my Spiderman Masks but seeing the results of the investment is great. Would love one of these helmets once finished.

This picture has never been more appropriate for me:

    Seriously amazing (and QUICK) work.

I hope the final thing has drool proof paint on it, because something tells me it will be necessary if I ever get near one.

Cost isn't necessarily an issue, especially if you're just looking for a display piece or just printing the helmet, but if it's part a full suit, 3D printed, the total cost would be what ? around 10000$ ? I can't imagine putting that much money in a suit... It's a shame 3D printing is still so expensive !
I'm still looking forward to see the result, I'm sure it will be awesome !

If you own a 3D printer the actual cost of the material may not be too bad. For the printers that extrude a filament of plastic it's around $40/Kg:

MakerBot TV S02E07 - How Much Plastic? - YouTube

Obviously you need one that prints the pieces big enough, but there are some hobby style ones around similar to the Makerbot where you can extend the axis, otherwise you'd have to make all of it in small pieces and stick them together, or design the pieces so they interlock:

Printing Large Objects on 3D Printer without Warping - YouTube (about 1:40 onward)

Getting someone else to print it commercially though is going to be costly, and other types of 3D printing are more expensive depending on the material they use...

Any kind of 3D printer that you can currently buy as a hobbiest would be sub par IMO. The resolution is not anywhere near what you would need to make these pieces properly. The printers that use extruded plastics do not have the resotution at .2 mm. An OBJET with the resoution and proformance one would need to compare to Shapeways for example would be in the $270,000 range last I heard from a guy that was deciding btween that and a 5 axis cnc mill which would cost less than half that.

Regardless this thread isn't about how much money or time I'm going to sink into this but the end product and the work being produced no matter the way we get there. So back on topic.
