May 29, 2012 - An inexperienced person trying to build MK 4. #1

I will be building it from cardstock due to people saying its great for a start.
Are there any tips you guys can offer me?
Like how to make things easier?
Because I tried completing a helmet 2 weeks ago, until now i didnt finish it. Its because it looked crappy and wrong.
The flaps are the most difficult thing here, so are the tiny pieces.
Im pretty sure all of you guys started out like this.
Lend some fellow members some help
Thanks, once i've started on it, I will be posting up my progress.
    Thanks in advance

I'm working on the same helmet right now, and lemme tell ya, I'm right there with you frustration-wise. Granted, my cardstock mockup actually looks pretty decent, and it seems to fit my noggin, but my ears push the sides of the helmet out a bit so it looks a bit... odd. I guess I gotta return to the drawing board.

Anyway, I'm no expert at this, but once you get to the foam stage, you might try doing the smaller details on thinner "craft" foam. That's what I intend to try, and I seem to recall several of the IM gurus on the forum recommending as much.

I'm taking my time with this build, but if I come up with any solutions, I'll certainly share them. In the meantime, I wish you luck!

Hello! I am just starting out as well. I Did my first piece trying to use hot glue and it turned out very bad! However, that being said, I have done crafts and RC planes for a loong time and the first thing to remember is patience. I have built many complicated aircraft and just like planes you have to test fit, really visualize what you are building and how it works together with the next piece. Then next is experiment! I quickly realize hot glue was not for me in every case. Some of the seams and flaps are so close together I could not get them glued without burns or having it turn out like crap, with lots of bumps, smears and spider threads everywhere. I found that on many, for me most pieces, I am using Elmers white glue, a fine paint brush to apply it and a small old hair dryer to speed up drying time. It is almost as fast as the hot glue with no first degree glue burns LOL! You can still singe your fingers with the dryer but it doesnt stick to you like napalm! LOL! Third be ready to throw a few pieces out after you try them. Its only cardstock and time. Time you cant replace but you gained valuable experience. You should have seen the first few planes I built, but after some time and patience, people, literally tons of them were asking me to build for them! Here are two pictures. The first is my first piece sitting on the laptop. It is Iron Mans wrist piece. The seams are bulky and the fit is not tight, note too the hot glue smears. The second is literally my second attempt using all Elmers! The Iron Man boot. I am starting at the bottom and working my way up. I am not kidding you by saying I have it licked yet, in fact I am buying the Helmet from ProjectEarth7. He does a fantastic job and it is worth far more to me to work on the armor. Lastly remember if you Bondo or fiberglass, it will cover up some of the dips and high spots as you will be resanding in all the details. The PEP is just a support structure for the finally work! You startded out on what I would consider the harest piece! The helmet is so signature and in your face so to speak, it should be darn near perfect. Remember too, you can look to the other builds and YouTube for ideas! The folks on YouTube are doing some great stuff, and don't forget to look at building special effects and prop building as well. There are great How To Videos for most everything you need!!! Just because they are building Halo armour doesn't mean it doesnt apply on a construction level!
I am going to start a thread on my build as well because as I build i want to mechanize as many of the suits features, like flaps that I can! I hope this helps. Be of good faith, you have been bitten by the PEP bug just like me. Please stay in touch so we can share our trials and tribulations and help each other along with all the great folks here at RPF they are an awesome crowd!

If you want to make it easier, try foam instead of cardstock. And I think the best thing you could do is start with something other than the helmet. I know it is the "cool" piece, but it is also one of the most difficult. Start on something smaller, like a forearm gauntlet, to work out the kinks and figure out how everything fits together. Once you get the hang of it, you can move on to more detailed pieces.
