    Jul 13, 2012 - The Incredible Hulk Build W.I.P #1

    Hey guys,
having worked with iron man foam suits and lycra suits for sometime now, i've decided to work on my next project.

I'm gonna be building an Incredible Hulk suit from the Avengers movie. However, I would love some input and advice from some experienced members here especially those with knowledge of latex.

For my suit, I'm gonna be building my own muscle suit that will look something (I hope) like Flex Designs muscle suits. I saw the one he made for a Kilowog muscle suit and was utterly impressed.

However, the suit is going to be a little bit different. Instead of covering the sofa upholstery foam that will be the muscle base with cloth, I will do so with latex. Does anyone think that it will not be proper? Im doing that as i want the leathery texture of skin to be part of the suit. Additionally, will the latex tear?

The next thing is, the wearer is 1.94m tall or 6' 4'' but im trying to make him at least 10 cm taller. What do you guys think? Any idea on how i'm gonna do that?

Hope to hear what you guys think!!! Let me know some of your feedback!

    Cheers,

    ian

No.They have have a stable base to walk on construction floors which arent the cleanest to start with. You can see them on ebay or google image search.

Yeah, i just saw that. I hope it wont look too out of proportion though. at one point i was figuring high platform shoes. though. now, just gotta find out if latex would work on porous foam, like those of sofa upholstery!

I have seen it done in the past with ninja turtle costumes, and the thing. Sculpting the muscles out of upolstry foam, and topcoating with latex. It will work. I would recommend a high density foam though, as cheap upolstry foam can start to deteriorate very quickly, especially when it gets wet.

but just to check, by applying the latex, will it cause the suit to warp?

I have not built much with latex, but..

I would also use a foam with more closed cells than upholstery foam. Upholstery foam is, I think, too good at absorbing liquids. It can also be difficult to sculpt in soft foam.
Keep in mind when you are making the suit that liquid latex can become quite stiff when it has dried.

Latex does shrink when it dries, so yes, that could cause some warping. You could avoid some warping by brushing thinner layers, letting each dry before brushing the next.

yes, im gonna try that out first. i do feel that a pure muscle suit with cloth is inefficient and sure hope that the latex will at least make it look a little more realistic. Im not too sure with stilts as i want the hulk to be able to jump about and lumber about more like a gorilla that was in the avengers movie
