    Jun 9, 2012 - IM/WM hybrid #1

    Hi everybody!

I've been skirting around the idea of building an Iron Man armour for a while now and have hit on an idea this evening of making everything as Iron Man but the War Machine back and having the mounted gatling gun in red with the barrels in gold.

i was thinking possibly combining the Mk 7 chest with the WM back piece as the 'ammo packs' on the mk 7 might be easily matched in the to packs on the WM armour what with this being my first attempt at anything like this (I have pep'ed an Iron Man helmet but haven't gone the whole hog and glassed and bondo'd it).

2 questions spring to mind, firstly, has anyone attempted something like this or would you think it madness?

and secondly, how do people mount the gun to the back/shoulders? have looked around and can't seem to find any definitive ideas.

    Thanks!

first of YES YES DO IT NOW

second iv seen people mount it to the back with some pipes just get one piece of pipe thats just big enough to have some more slide into it then make the whole rig for holding it out of the smaller pipes that way you can attach the larger pipe to the back and just slot it in itll move rotate that way

due to my lack of photoshop I've mocked up the paint job for the cannon in paint which i think looks cool...

this might explain it better but add the larger pipe onto the back of the suit and put one in the gun so it can rotate

    genius.
didn't even considersomething like that, could build it into the pack on the shoulder or in the centre of the back...

think i may be biting off more than i can chew on a first build but hey, worth a shot!

id say the centre of the back itll help the armour balance better i put a gun on my war machine and just mounted it to the shoulder it threw the balance of the chest and back piece they would always tilt to the right it really sucks in the end i just had to cut it of. my girlfriend uses it now and shes smaller than me and the tilt was awful on her lol

Its supposed to be mounted in the center and pivots side to side from there

after checking out the Iron Patriot pics from the Iron Man 3 set, i'm thinking a small rocket launchery type thing as an alternative to the gatling gun.

does anyone know of any pep files for the gatling gun or if anyone else has added an alternative to their costumes?

hey bud im on my way to start building a War machine costume, and what i intend to do with the gun on the back, is have a small framework on the back of the suit, made of iron, cover it with a few plates of foam for comfort, then wield a rod to it in the length i needs, weld the angles on, and on the top ill mount the gun , cus ill prob make it out of wood foam and cardboard so putting a big fat bolt to weld to the iron should be the least of my issues, i know you think iron is heavy but the rod don't have to be more than 10 MM thick rly as long as you weld it properly and maybe stiffen it, you can use aluminum too but i don't own a alou welder so, to keep the cost down ill just use scrap metal. it will take me a few months be4 i get to that stage in my build thou so i dont have any pictures for you, but thats the idea im gonna try out, hope it helps,

and btw i wouldn't want it to rotate, like firebapx draws, cus when you walk it will swing around and annoy the **** out of you, less you put a bolt in to "stop the pipe from turning, mine will be completely stationary except the actual gun, + 2 pipes like that will put a lot of weight in 1 area of the suit, and you cant do that less you have a framework, (like in a fjellrζven bag)

    anyways, good luck!

Towards the end of day it was pulling to the right. I suggest whatever you do, keeping it as light as possible.

This version shot nerf darts lol. Eventually the idea was scrapped. Too heavy and too hard to reload.

Hammer, I don't have any real skills or imagination to do something like that!
I was thinking of using Firebapx's image as a guide but do it with plastic tubing and have it locked in place so it doesn't slap me around the head when i turn!

Shades, you can see it's making it lean, I'm not a perfectionist but that'd annoy the crap out of me so I think mounting it from the middle will be more comfy.

you have no idea how much I'd love it to fire stuff but like you say, reloading would be a pain and unless it could be arm mounted I wouldn't trust my aim enough to not take someone's eye out!

I'm thinking possibly something like the weapon on the back of the Iron Patriot shown here maybe mounting on the shoulder but the more i'm thinking, if i do that i'd have to counter balance it on the other side of the back with the same weight to keep it even but then standing in it for any length of time could be awkward with more weight, though building something like that with foam probably wouldn't be too heavy I'd assume?

also, the more I look at the Patriot armour, the more I want it to be a bit different, what would you think of this colour scheme?

    I'd be IRN MAN!

do you mean having straps attahced to the back piece to hold it steady?
would you then just clip the front on?
