    Aug 4, 2012 - Ideas Needed for a Monster Hunter #1

Hey guys and girls, I was hoping that some of you would be able to help me out with ideas for a costume I'm planning. The idea is kind of a take on Van Helsing / Jack Crow (Vampires), a monster hunter though (not just Vampires) type of person. The back story I was thinking of is that he'd be a mercenary hired periodically by the church to do their dirty work and hunt down and deal with any reports they get of 'evil' in the world.

I've got a black duster coat I was planning on using but I'm open to change. I was hoping some of you would chime in with ideas?

What weapons should I use? I was thinking a couple of nerf guns and a sword, but which nerf guns would you suggest? What type of sword? Anything else you'd add?

I'm still not decided on a era to base it either, do I go Wild West style? Modern day? Something between?

Any help/ideas will be much appreciated

Ibuilt a vampire/monster hunting kit for my brother as a birthday present one year, can't find the pictures at the moment but it contained a lot of items. Some of the more popular items were, Stakes, silver bullets, vials of holy water, and crosses. Some of the more unusual were, salt: commonly used to keep evil at bay as most vampires/ ghost/demons can not cross a line of salt or flour, Seeds of several kinds, as several monsters have counting disorders that when presented with a pile of small seeds they have to count them, mirrors for detection, and iron as pure metals have various effects on monsters.
Hope that will start you off.
Oh, and here is a link to several victorian monster/vampire killing kits:Steampunk inspirations Link on main page.

Have you seen "Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter"? I liked the style of the film and it had some pretty cool mythology that I hadn't seen in other vampire/monster hunter films.

Have you seen the movie Troll Hunter? A miniaturized version of his strobing flash gun would be cool. And a gun with a dial with settings for different monsters :P

Thanks for ideas so far guys, I'm open to any help, suggestions and advice on this, its my first costume. The man catcher is an awesome idea, something I would never even considered, same with the knife belt, how did I forget knives?

I'll have to check out Captain Kronos and troll hunter for ideas. The kit looks amazing, maybe I could do it like Ric's arsenal in the mummy so it unrolls.

Believe it or not, I've never seen Hellboy. I need to check it out some time. The wife is addicted to Supernatural, I guess this costume would be easier if I had the impala to carry everything round in

For a subtle nod to your wife's love of Supernatural, add a replica pearl handled colt like Dean Winchester's (http://www.imfdb.org/w/images/thumb/...ro_Machete.jpg) or THE Colt (http://www.imfdb.org/w/images/9/92/The_Colt.jpg)

Trench coats are so stereotypical for monster hunter movies. In reality, they seem kind of impractical. I like the military look more. Hunters should look utility like a marine or something.

Take a look at some of the weapons used in "Constantine".....I always liked the brass knuckles with holy symbols on them....

I just started reading Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. One of the things described that caught my attention was a thick leather collar he wore around his neck. Just something that instantly made sense to me and would look pretty great with a duster.

I like the duster idea, simply because it's sort of iconic to Van Helsing but if hunters really existed I can also appreciate that they'd probably more technically kitted out. It's taking a lot of twists and turns as I slowly plan this costume, I love the thought of doing a modern day hunter (like Constantine/supernatural) but don't think anyone would know who I was meant to be.

Love the idea of the collar too, that maybe something I could try and incorporate.

It's all about the props, dude. Lots of prop guns, knives, etc will make it pretty clear. Just strap them ALL OVER yourself haha. Don't forget iconic things too, like stakes, and a big cross or other religious symbol, something silver.

For more subtle funny - what about Wesley Wyndam-Pryce's hidden extendable stakes from Angel? They were like the Assassin's Creed hidden blades, except wooden stakes for killing vampires. There are tuts for building the AC hidden blades with drawer slides.

Hey man, I really think you should go with a Frontier Trapper type monster hunter, a Jeremiah Johnson kind of guy. The fur trappers had all sorts of interesting doohickeys that could be turned into monster trapping devices. They also carried a ton of extra gear and provisions due to the harsh elements they were exposed to, meaning you get to pack on a ton of monster related items and still remain convincing, instead of just looking over burdened. In fact, many carried large backpacks that could potentially be chock full of monster hunting paraphernalia. I think the fur trapper idea gives you a ton of interesting options for your imagination to really run wild seeing as on a very basic level they had the same job, capture/kill interesting creatures/animals.

As for the other options, I may be alone on this but I am sick to death of Steampunk outfits and I think you are right in that a modern day monster hunter will be confusing and limit what you can actually put on the costume seeing as a modern day hunter would need to not attract that much attention. Obviously go with what YOU are interested in, but keep in mind that you have the chance to do something really different and unique which is a welcome change in the sea of Ironman/Batman/Halo/Steampunk costumes we have all come to know incredibly well.

In fact, your idea to do a Wild West monster hunter inspired me to do this sketch for you to show you what I am kind of talking about as far as Frontier Monster Hunter goes!

    [/IMG]

To explain some of the things in the image:

    • I gave him a tri-corner hat to show a conneciton to a civilised world, seeing as you said he might take requests from the church.
    • He is wearing standard Fronteirsy dress, with the big duster shoulder pads covered in a string of garlic for vampire defense and dangly leather pieces.
    • One belt has stakes for Vampire killing, the other has different types of crosses for different types of demons/monsters.
    • Main belt has all kinds of pockets for herbs, spices, and other witchcrafty charms like Mars42 suggested.
    • In the right hand is a pistol for demon/vampires as it can shoot stakes and holy water filled bullets (I included three different sizes for different types of demonic creatures). I drew it so it was engraved with angelic looking flourishes and angel wings on the barrel and chamber. Also, you always gotta include the Rosary.
    • In the left hand is a pistol for werewolf hunting, including teeth, werewolf engravings, and a cut off bob of a werewolf's tail.
    • The calf portion of most Frontiersman seems to always have been wrapped in big thick pillowy materials so for the left leg it is a werewolf pelt and the right it is a broken dragon/gargoyle wing.

For the sake of keeping the sketch readable I didn't include a big backpack full of monster hunting gear, or that awesome staff Jannix Quinn mentioned.

I hope this is helpful in some way, even if you don't go with a Frontier type character.

Hey kronogor, I'm honoured that you'd take to the time to sketch up your ideas for me, thank you. This is still in the early planning stages so I'm open to ALL ideas. I've never been a fan of the tri corner hat, I don't know what it is about it but I've just never liked them. The rest of the ideas though, I LOVE so again thank you. I could use a lot of the ideas and still keep it with a western feel (I think I'm leaning that way, sort of a Undead Nightmare feel)

I'm kind of agreed with you on the steampunk feel. Some of the steampunk monster hunters I 've seen are awesome but the ideas been done to death I think.

Anyone else want to chime in?

I feel ya on the hat, it took me a while to come around to the tri-corner too actually; definitely not for everyone.

I am not sure if you saw "True Grit" but in the film they come across a fur trapper type character with a bear's head for a hat. That idea could turn into something really cool for your monster hunting costume, some kind of mythological beast's head as a helm; like a werewolf pelt, dragon skull, basilisk skin cowboy hat, demon hide, vampire skull helm, aztec themed helm to show that he is well traveled, etc.

I'm a fan of the "Monster Hunter" thing so I'll be watching this with interest.
I did a monster hunter / Mandalorian from Star Wars crossover last year. I'm currently working on a Ghostbuster / Monster Hunter crossover this year.
    Good luck!

It pretty cool check it out he's got they up for sale now too...

That's a cool document! I'm working on a monster hunter idea myself. I've always loved the look of the iconic cowboy but maybe with a monster hunter twist. What if John Wayne or Clint Eastwood played a monster hunter?

    Hey Dude,

I have a couple of ideas i will throw in. Have you ever played the game Fallout 3? There are some really cool looking outfits/weapons you could make from that game.

Also check out the movie 'Priest' with Paul Bettany and Karl Urban. Some good monster hunter ideas there too.

Personally, I would have two maverick nerf guns (painted) in holsters under the duster, A crossbow with a variety of bolts (wood, silver, explosive, etc), definitely a sword, some kind of combat knife on one leg, some basic armor plates under the duster (something like the Mass effect/dark knight chest armor), and lets not forget the iconic Van Helsing hat and face cover. Also I like the idea of covering typical strike areas like neck, wrists and ankles with thick leather/armor so you look more legit.

Just my thoughts, hope it helps.

As an addition, may I recommend a heavy duty anti-bite collar... perhaps a heavy leather infused with garlic and studded with silver...

Don't know if this thread is still active, but here it goes.
You spoke of a Vatican Funded Superntaural Bounty Hunter here's some ideas I came up with for clothing and accessories. You can maybe call your character something like Smite Saxon.

    Some suggestions..

    1) Some "Bounty/Wanted" posters with Vampires ,Weres , Demons etc like - " Wanted Dead for Demonic Possession and Murder of a Priest.
Reward - 5,000 Alms. You can make the poster on any art programme, print it out and dip the corners or splash cold tea on the paper aging it up.

    2) A Rosary Bead Bull-Whip or Lasso, if in whip form have a crucifx as handle. Easily made by buying some beads and a length of string and attaching it to a wooden crucifix.

    3) Create some kind of Exorcism and Execution Warrant complete with elaborate warrant badge crucifix , signed and sealed by a Vatican Official, that reads with something like - Empowered by God to be his wrath and his sword . Let no man stand in the way of sacred duty.

4 ) Keeping with the Vatican-Agent idea, create The Confessor - basically a Rosary Bead gun. Using a plastic bb gun or ball-shooting nerf gun ad colourize the balls for different purposes. Stringing some ammo together to form bondliers of different rosaries. Each colour could serve a purpose - Silver for Were , Hail Marys Metalic red are high explosive used for demons, clear glass filled with Holy Water. Green are anti-ectoplasm for Spectres and other entites etc.

    5) A Oxblood leather duster if you can get one, in the backstory it could be made from flayed demon-skin, with maybe a hat to match.
