Aug 9, 2012 - How to remove silicone mold which stuck onto my helmet? #1

I wanted to duplicate my painted helmet and I did test with brush on RTV silicone on a small portion of it.
I was able to remove it easily the first time.

I put silicone on the entire helmet for the second time but it stuck on the surface of the helmet. Maybe i left the brush on silicone too long on the helmet.
Is there any way that i can scrub / melt or remove the silicone ?
I have peel off a quarter inch of mold already ...but the bottom layer is stuck on the surface..
    Thanks

in truth i dont think you put it on thick enough its just breaking apart if it was a thicker layer it would all come of in one piece just a thought

Did you put a mold release on the helmet before you put silicone on it?

It depends upon what silicone you are using. Most silicone manufacturers sell mold release. For example, I use Polytek PlatSil Gel silicone, I use Pol Ease 2500 spray as a mold release.

I have heard of people using a thin layer of Vaseline as a mold release, however I have never tried it.

Ah just realised this is silicone, Im goin to be using latex for my mold, my mask maker buddy says with latex you dont need a mold release it just peels right off so I should be ok

Bought it from a local shop. The faceplate is sealed and wanted to edit some of the details. That is why I want to do a recast.

I had this happen with my sith acolyte mask, unfortunately there seemed to be no easy way to remove the silicone without damage to the mask underneath. Fortunately I had my wife to sacrifice her finger nails to get most of the silicone out from the details.

I was left with a slightly battle damaged mask

I am pretty sure he was asking the guy recasting the Iron Man helmet.

I have never heard of silicone doing that before, but I have only made a few molds. Even if there were silicone additives in the paint, why would the mold stick to the paint better than it sticks to other layers of rubber?

It looks like your rubber delaminated. I can tell by the color that it is not the same stuff I use, but mine says to add the next layer when the current layer is "tacky", but not wet.

I would check with the rubber manufacturer or their distributor to see what might have gone wrong, how to keep it from happening in the future, and if they recommend any specific mold release.

As for getting the rubber off. Uh, good luck? You might want to try something like a Bondo/Body Filler spreader that is rigid but won't scratch the paint.

I just hope your original helmet wasn't too expensive buddy as it looks like you may end up having to cause a bit of damage to it now to get this crap off! good luck with it though

White spirit will help remove the silicone, will still need to scrub it off though
