Apr 30, 2008 - Hellboy Hand Of Doom Costume Question #1

I was just wondering if that mass produced Hand Of Doom is movable? Also, if anyone here has any actual pics of it, I would like to see how it actually looks.

Which one are you talking about? There were two (which I own).
There is the sideshow one: fantastic piece made of very hard and dense rubber and is cast directly from one of the screen used pieces so it is full sized with sharp, accurate details. The color is a little dark but a little paint job can remedy that. Price: 200-300.
Then there is the Rubies one (you can tell because the Sideshow's fingers are extended and the Rubie's is in a fist). Honestly, it's not terrrible. It's made of foam and it's undersized. Many of the details aren't there so obviously not very accurate. The color is more off on this one than the Sideshow but again, easily remedied.
For costuming, you probably want to go with the Sideshow piece. For a prop display, you could probably get away with the Rubie's one if you're not really looking for accuracy. Price is about 25 bucks. So yeah, price is a real factor.
    I hope this helps.

I have the Sideshow version. It is awesome. The fingers are softer than the rest of it but they are pretty immobile.

    That looks awesome.
Goat, when can I come over and play with that?
    Babysitting is not a problem.

Thanks for the help, I was talking about the Rubies one. It's only like $30 shipped off ebay and from what I seen it looks really good, in the catalog pics anyways. I just wanted to know if you could move the fingers in it and all. I want to put together a full Hellboy costume one day so gonna start doing the research now.

The fingers are NOT moveable at all with the Rubie's. It's molded into a fist.

I used to have the Sideshow one and it is truly an awesome piece.

I had to sell it to prevent myself from going down the Hellboy-related-collecting route

The forearm section of the Rubies looks too short in comparison - maybe it could be extended, or replace it entirely?

Does anything like a template / schematic for the movie version hand exist?
I figure the forearm could be built up from rings of rigid foam, and carve the hand & fingers from the same stuff, maybe even figure a means of making the fingers mobile (kinda like this: http://www.instructables.com/id/Simp...s-robotic-hand ).

Just need a measurements & such.

BlindSquirrel did an awesome replica/tutorial of the HoD on his blog, he did it with MDF, but the insulation/rigid foam, could be a better option (especially if you cover it with resin or fiberglass, and also it will be lighter...)

The Sideshow version is made from case-hardened-foam (like a boogie board) with maybe a bit of PVC pipe reinforcement in the forearm. It has a handle near the wrist so you can wear it but it does get heavy after a while so if you're going to an all day con consider bringing a shoulder bag or better yet a support team. I was going to make a big baby travel case for mine but I didn't get around to it.

This seems like the perfect project to make out of the rubber mats that everyone is using for armor. Someone could knock it out in a couple days.
