Lookin good!![]()
FINALLY finished with the sculpt! I'll be ordering the materials for molding this week, and if they arrive by next weekend I'll be molding! The horns are made from some plastic that I had lying around with a detail layer of NSP on top. They will be cast separately from the mask in solid resin, and glued into place with silicone.
I know a few people have expressed interest in getting a copy of the silicone mask once complete. Assuming the molding goes well (I don't even want to think of what would happen if it didn't!) I would be happy to do a run on this. I'll likely be casting it in Dragon Skin 10, unless someone has some other suggestions.
I'm thinking it will be in the $600 range without hair, and the $1100 range with full punched hair. It will all depend upon how much silicone it takes to cast, so that range may change a bit (might be a bit cheaper, might be a bit more). I'll know more in the next few weeks after I get it molded and a first casting done.
So I will be molding this weekend, assuming all the supplies show up. Otherwise early next week. I'm nervous and excited!
Got all my molding supplies, save one. And of course it was the one thing I absolutely needed. It should be arriving Monday, so I think I'll mold on Wednesday since I have the day off.
In the meantime, I refined the sculpt a bit more. The more I was looking at it, the more something seemed off. I realized the chin and the eye sockets were wrong, so I reworked them. Oddly enough, I liked the other chin better. But I think it's because of the fact that he has no hair right now.
Great sculpt! I've really enjoyed seeing your progress on it.
I secretly want an excuse to try my hand at sculpting a piece... but my hands are full right now so it will have to wait!![]()
I went ahead and molded the horns today. I figure that will give me good practice for molding the bust. They'll be ready to demold on Tuesday afternoon!
On a more somber note, I put up new shelves above my work bench yesterday. Apparently they couldn't support the weight I had on them, and one of them fell, dumping its contents right on top of the sculpt.
After a lot of cursing, cleanup, and reinstalling, the shelf is back up, and the bust is repaired. It took major damage to one of the horn sockets, and got a huge dent in the nose. Nothing that couldn't be repaired, but it scared the crap out of me. I really want to get that thing off my work bench for good.
Today's the day.
The bust is currently drying in the studio after being hit with a coat of mold release. Then the layers of Poly 74/30 start going on.
Really nervous that I'll screw it up.
Jesus Christ! Brilliant work mate! Can't wait to see the whole thing together. I'll keep this thread in my favorites.
Keep it up mate
Looks really good. Was curious though how will you be removing your core if you don't have a 2 piece mold? Or are you not going to run the silicone with a core?
Thanks!
Once the rubber has cured, I'll be making a 2 piece mother mold for it out of Poly 1512. Once that has cured, I'll remove the mother mold and cut a single seam into the back of the head, then peel the inner mold off the core. It will leave me with only one seam to deal with after casting, and about half that seam will be covered by hair.
Layer 3 is done!
4th layer done. 1 more smoothing layer to go and then it needs to sit until this weekend. Then it will be time to make the mother mold!
I had contemplated fiberglass, but I just didn't feel confident enough in my fiberglassing skills to risk this sculpt getting ruined trying to mold it. This stuff was super easy to use (1:1 ratio with lots of pot life), and while it was kind of pricey, it should get the job done. I might play around with fiberglass when I mold the tail. At least that won't be as complex a sculpt if I end up having to redo it.
Inner mold is now done, and will be curing until Saturday!
Outstanding work, I would be very interested in a mask in the near future.![]()
