    Jun 2, 2012 - Hellboy Costume - Complete! #1

Hi there! I'm new to the forum, but I've been lurking for quite a while looking at all the amazing stuff people here create.

I'm currently working on a Hellboy costume. My goal is to make it as screen accurate as possible. Originally I was going to use foam latex for the facial prosthetics, but eventually decided that a silicone mask would work much better.

I'm finished collecting parts to assemble it for the most part. Here's where I'm at so far:

The pants: I found a pair of leather pants that are extremely accurate to the film version:

Here's what I found for the jacket. Still have to weather it, shorten the right arm, and add the straps and buckles. The color is slightly lighter than I'd prefer, and I'm still contemplating ways to make it darker:

The shirt I'm using is an Underarmour shirt, which I will need to widen the collar slightly and add the red piping around it.

I originally contemplated getting the Sideshow Samaritan, but instead went with the resin one that is readily available online:

I'm currently working heavily on this. I've already cleaned it up, and filled holes with Milliput. Then it will get a final sanding and then it's off to primer and paint.

For the belt, I went with the Hollywood Collectibles holster. I will be weathering it and repainting the buckle. For the locator beacon, I went with the Spatcave resin one:

I will be wiring it with LED.

So that's where I'm at currently. I purchased 40 lbs of Chavant clay the other day, and hope to start on the mask portion of this adventure within the next week or so.

I got it on eBay from this seller: eBay My World - coolmodels

EDIT: Which, after doing some searching on the RPF, I now realize is a recaster. Had I known this I'd have never purchased it. Grrrr...

It's a learning experience. This isn't the first costume I've made, but it is definitely my first attempt at trying to make a costume screen accurate.

Luckily, I have no more pieces to buy, so I won't be accidentally supporting the recasters.

From the stuff I read about coolmodels on the RPF, I completely agree - it is a very rough recast that has required a lot of work so far.

Today I have been sanding. And sanding. And sanding. Just when I think I'm done sanding, I realize I need to sand more.

Now I understand why it helps to start with a good resin casting. Between the bondo (and the sanding) and the Milliput (and the sanding), I suspect I might have the Samaritan done sometime next year. I already lost the thin strip of resin at the top of the barrel (it was way too thin and had already cracked once), so I removed it and machined a metal strip to take its place. I'll be epoxying it in tomorrow. Then I will put a coat of primer on it and see how things look. Then probably sand some more. Because sanding.

I was shocked to find them for only $80. The fit is really nice. Very comfortable.

Yes and yes. As I said earlier, I went with an Underarmour shirt which I will alter to widen the neck line and add the red piping around the collar. $24.99 directly from Underarmour:

The boots I got are a used pair of military boots I found on eBay. I used frightzone_4_you's picture of the screen used boots as a reference:

    And here's what I found:

The strip of leather on the side isn't quite as wide, and it only has 12 eye holes as opposed to the 15 that the screen used ones have, and they don't have the zipper going up the inside, but the style is most definitely correct, and they'll be under the pants for the most part. If anyone gets down on their hands and knees to count the eye holes, they'll get a boot to the head anyway.

They cost me about $30 with shipping, although I've seen that style boot go for upwards of $70 used. I'll be taking them to a local shoe repair place and having the existing soles removed, and thicker soles added. I'm thinking they'll probably need to be 2" thick to be close to correct, which will put my Hellboy at 6'4" tall. That will put me very close to the correct height, considering Ron Perlman is 6'1" tall.

The shirt does have longer sleeves but it shouldn't matter too much if you have the duster on!

I used a banana republic shirt similar to this one..
mens BANANA REPUBLIC solid blue SWEATER CREWNECK LOGO MEN'S L large | eBay

Its actually a good fit as far as color. the ebay one is very light because of the flash in the camera.
I'm updating mine and going to sew the red piping on.

That's a great picture of the shirt. Thanks for that! But yeah, I just wanted it to be the proper stretchiness to show the muscles under the shirt, which is why I figured Underarmour would work well. And since I will be wearing this in the heat of Florida in October, short sleeves seemed more logical.

Wow! That's them, and for only $86 USD too. Although I suspect shipping would be a nightmare. Judging by the picture, it looks like they added some thickness to the film shoes though.

Yours is one of the websites I have saved in my favorites folder! Your use of foam on the RHOD was really a great idea! I had originally made a scratch built RHOD about 3 years ago using green floral foam, which is easy to sculpt and extremely dense. Plus it will hold up to fiberglass resin without melting like a lot of foam does.

Unfortunately, it was in my house when I suffered frozen pipes, and a ceiling fell on it and damaged it. I held on to it, intending to repair it, but eventually decided that it made more sense to go with the Sideshow RHOD, since it was cast from a screen used prop. Before tossing the scratch built one, I did a side by side comparison to see how close I was (I just guessed on all the measurements originally). Shockingly, my scratch built one was darn near the correct size, and was only about an inch too tall.

I never liked the fingers on it though. I really want to have motion in the hand, and I'm contemplating cutting up the fingers on the Sideshow one to add the mechanisms to it to pull this off. I doubt I'd be able to do wrist motion, but if I can manage finger motion I'd be happy. If I do actually do that (not sure if I will yet...cutting up such an expensive prop takes some time to decide), I will likely be using your tutorial as a guide. I'll slice each finger down the center, to give me a top and a bottom, then dremel out a channel to house the mechanics. Then glue the whole thing back together and repaint.

I did have someone on the RPF offer to sell me another RHOD to do this, which I may end up buying. That way if I screw it up, I haven't destroyed my original, and I can still wear it.

Got the new strip attached on the top of the Samaritan, and put a coat of primer on it. That, of course, made all the other flaws stick out like a sore thumb. Back to sanding!

I decided to give the Samaritan a rest for a while. I was getting burned out on it, and frankly, it's not a major part of the costume, as it will be in its holster for the most part. Instead, I went ahead and began the sculpt for the mask. It's still very rough, but it's getting there.

Finished laying the base clay and began refining. I realized the nose was completely wrong, so I redid it. I have a very large head, so I'm building out the diameter of the sculpt to accommodate it. I think it gives the overall head a much nicer shape anyway. This would probably be easier had I gotten a lifecast. Perhaps in the future I will do it, but for now I will just use my manual caliper to continue taking measurements of my head and using those measurements on the sculpt.

Wow. Looking at these pictures from yesterday, it seems like ages ago.

I didn't like the horn placement, so I moved them up and out, and gave them much better definition. I also realized his left cheek was much better defined than his right, so I started working on that as well. I added some wrinkles and creases (and his left cheek scar), although they need a lot more work. Unfortunately I can't seem to get good smoothness when using sculpting tools as opposed to just using my fingers, but I can't get my fat fingers even close to the edges of the creases or wrinkles without smooshing them.

Tomorrow I will start working on giving the ears better definition, and then I'll begin smoothing him out.
