FIINISHED! Gundam RX-78-2

Crooked

New Member
I was asked to show my progress on my Gundam RX-78 costume so I made a thread to update those who are interested. :cool This is my first time making any type of costume, but I felt pretty confident after seeing Clivelee's amazing tutorial below

http://www.therpf.com/f24/general-gundam-mecha-cosplay-tutorial-160555/

I've made a few changes here and there, mostly in materials. Instead of corrugated plastic, I'm working with corrugated cardboard for the inner frame and foam sheets (2mm, 3mm, and 1/2in) over it. It will be based mostly on the ver 3.0/RealGrade design shown below. Comments and questions are more than welcome!

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

I'v build over a hundred Gundam model kits (most for commissions, some for shows)... but a costume... never.

Simply AWESOME.

I can't wait to see more! Especially since you chose the RG version (love the dual color tones they went with for each regular colors). You have plenty of details to work with, good luck! :thumbsup

This^^^

I have built so many MG's and always wanted a larger scale model. The biggest I have is the 1/48 mega scale zaku and RX-78. This is going to be a killer. subscribed!!!

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

I love gundam model kits! And I can't wait to see more gundams walking around! Seems like you're off to a good start :)

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Yes, another Gundam build! I'm hoping to start on Deathscythe Custom in the next year. Definitely will be watching this.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Thanks for the kind words guys, I appreciate it :)
Here's what I got done since last time; it's mostly just waist/skirt pieces. In addition to the tape, the front/back skirts are reinforced in the inside with little pieces of cardboard glued to the edges. I'll probably do the same for the side skirts (top). Got some 1/2" foam and I'm relieved to find out that angled cuts aren't as difficult as I thought haha... The foam on the crotch piece haven't been glued on yet. The "belt" (far right) is reinforced with aluminum L brackets attached via zipties. I'll add another layer of cardboard to it once it has been assembled.

That's pretty much why I chose the RG, in hopes that the details will help cover up any imperfections ehehe

EDIT: Worked a bit on it and got the yellow squares done. Tried wrapping one of them with 1mm yellow foam, and it was too thin to get nice edges... 2mm it is.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Been a while since I updated, but I don't have much done since the last post (though it took a hell of a long time to make, my god)

This is one of the four front/back skirt pieces, and even though the edges are far from perfect, I really like how it turned out. I still have some other details to add including the decals, but I wanted to show what I had so far. The yellow part is the cardboard covered with 2mm yellow craft foam and the white parts are 3mm white craft foam. The black you see is the cardboard layer underneath, just drawn over with a sharpie. It looks like a giant model kit piece!

Since I wont be going with a gloss finish, I decided to save myself the trouble and use colored foam instead of plastidip+paint for some of the parts. The decals will be cut up pieces of colored tape and applied like stickers.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

wow. that looks fantatic!!! how did you cover the bottom right double corners with the foam? in fact all corners as it looks like 1 piece without any seams

- - - Updated - - -

actaully closer look, I think I can see more than 1 piece

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Thanks :) Yeah, the seams aren't very noticeable on camera, but they're there. Luckily the panel lines work wonderfully in distracting from the imperfections. xD
All the faces of the edges are covered up by separate pieces. I would have just folded them over the edges, but I guess foam works differently than paper. Go figure :p

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

That looks great. I hope it will hold up for quite some time.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Thanks guys :D Here's what I got so far:

BFB4BA7D-1A02-4475-9401-FD1660EC6F13.jpg

Got the four skirt plates done! And started working on the covers for the shoulder armor. I decided to omit some of the detail on the back skirts. The colored foam over the cardboard is working really well for me and I wish I could do the entire costume this way... Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the right shade of blue and red. Ah well.

Oh, and does anybody know if you need a layer of primer over plastidip before painting? Or can you just paint directly over it? I got the gray spray on plastidip. Thanks!

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

This is looking GREAT!!!

I Just used 3 layers of pure PVA over my 2-3mm craft foam (foamies I think they are in the US) and then plastic primer followed by the paint and clear coat. That turned out very well.

This is completely made out of craft foam

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

nice build. i did built one the same way as yours. but mine is not as detail as yours.
looking forward for the final product. :)

Wow, that came out amazingly smooth looking. O_O I'll definitely keep that in mind if I do glossy/metallic finishes :)

Thank you! Yeah I saw your thread on it. Looks awesome!

Anyway, I'm back! Right now I'm working on the shoulder armor. The angled edges are taking a while, but they look alright. I cant wait to start slapping on the decals on this hehe.
