Foam Thor armor help

I'm making a female Thor costume. I'm using the Avengers movie as inspiration and making my own interpretation of it. But I have no clue how to make the armor. I just want to make the shoulder pads that hold up his cape, but I have never made armor before. I've gotten a basic idea from this website, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.
