Finished "We Are ODST" costume

Hello all,

Here is my finished ODST costume, modeled after the suits in the live-action trailer "We Are ODST" for Halo 3: ODST. All of the armor pieces are fiberglass castings which began as some custom-modified pepakura pieces as well as hand-sculpted pieces by yours truely. I also did some 3D modeling for it and made my own pepakura pieces for the backpack, gauntlets, and butt piece. The costume also includes several custom sewn parts, such as the shoulder and thigh pads and the groin flap.

This is one of four suits I'm building for my group. We'll be showing them off at Dragon*Con. After the con, though, I'll be making several upgrades to it for more accuracy. So thought it's finished for now, I'm not done with it.

Enjoy!

As I said in my helmet thread, I'm not going to. I never intended to.

Looks great. Did you do anything special to stop your visor from fogging up? I can only imagine that costume getting hot as hell to wear, unless you are wearing an astronaut like cooling system underneath all that.

Wow, thatīs a GREAT looking costume!!!
Also, I really love the backpack... would be cool to have one of these for non-costuming stuff, going to work, university and such.

Out of curiosity, do you have air vents cut into the helmet? I don't see any obvious ones. Looks great!

At the time of the photo shoot, I didn't do anything. It was fogging up pretty good when I was just standing there. But when I would move around, it would start to go away. While I'm moving, I can feel a decent amount of air moving around inside the helmet. I'll probably just get some anti-fog spray or something along those lines.

Yeah I was thinking of doing that, actually. The actors in the filmed costumes were all sweaty and dirty, so I was thinking of bringing something to dirty us up. Any recommendations? We are going to be sweating, a LOT, so preferably something that will stay on.

Yes, there are lots of vents. The small wedge-shaped spaces immediately behind the visor (right in front of the ears) is actually doubled-up black wire mesh vents. Then there are the cheek vents, and then there are also some slots cut out on the top surface of the jaw line (just like in the live-action short). Unfortunately I didn't catch good references for the back of the helmet until after this thing was sculpted, so the vents that should be on the back bottom edge of the helmet aren't there. however, the neck hole is open enough that it really doesn't matter.

that"S a great idea but i also would question why the troopers face is dirty when they have a helmet..

Military-grade camo paint/paste works a charm. Sticks on like glue, even when you sweat a lot.

Re: Finished "We Are ODST" costume

Wow! Despite lots of different WIPs I have seen of this costume/armour - its still always astounds me how each one is slightly variable, and how great and different the finished product appears.

Gives me hope for my paltry efforts

Thanks for sharing man!

Uhm, can you post some more picks of the backpack? It's so great! And I'm having a hard time finding any good reference pics. And since yours is so good, I figured maybe you'd be willing to share some more pics
