Dracks Ironman MK VI Build (helmet update)

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Foam Build (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

I use Hycote spray for my primer, colour and lacquer. Not sure if you know of a store called Trago Mills. They are basically a store that have buyers that go to auctions and buy stuff cheap so we don't have to pay out loads. They also as far I can tell have some permanent suppliers too so thankfully my spray supplies are not going to dry up.
I got mine at £2.49 for the primer and laqcuer and £2.99 for the colour sprays. Which is very cheap but if you try to get around that your good.

Hope that helps,
Tom.
lol i actually have been to trago mills when i was a kid blast from the past!!!:lol

Beautiful helmet, excellent job!

Thank you Doc. I am getting a bit excited now as just finished the last of the imperfection filling and detailing last night so it's just a case of waiting for my PVC foam board to turn up to make new ears and I am ready for the hinges.

Hey dude,

Awesome tutorials. Never thought of the snap fasteners for connecting pieces.

Cheers

Glad you like them. I really wish I had more time to do better ones. My wife has given me permission to leave my job in march so maybe I will have time to do some new better quality ones then that go into more detail. I only did the ones on clean seams as I got asked a lot about how I do it

Really amazing stuff here! Hopefully one day I can create something as awesome as these suits!

Thank you and I am sure you can my friend. As I mentioned in the above quote I will hopefully be doing some better tutorials in march to help those out either starting foam builds or just help improve the skills of those that are having trouble with certain things.

Really impressive. Pictures taken from a distance are often deceiving, but in those close up images we can really see how perfect those cuts/seams are. Excellent work.

Cheers man. I know what you mean as I must admit there were some tiny imperfections on my helmet that weren't picked up by the camera but they are gone now after some tidying up last night.

very nice work D u got some real skills brother!

You know what? I spent a lot of time at our local Trago as a kid and still to this day get just as excited about going there and I am there every week. It's the best place for having everything and is always cheaper than every where else. I went to the one in Newton Abbot a couple of weeks ago and man that place is all higgeldy piggeldy. I left with nothing as the place just didn't make sense, shame as they seemed to have more than the one we have here.

Aww I liked the fact you said you were from Ecosse. Bet loads of people thought you lived in France as it is derived from French and Latin.

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Build. (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

lol and were back!

That's better, now we can see who are the knowledgable Brits out there lol :p
I only knew cause my brother in law lives in Glasgow and is a genius full of information and heard him use it a couple of times.

Hey Drack,

I tried some of your tips last night and they worked perfectly. Thanks again for the tutorials.

Also I used snap fasteners to attach pieces and it worked heaps better than anticipated. I highly recommend using this method to join fixed pieces.

It's posts like these that really make my day :)
So many people asked how I got clean seams so knocked the tutorials up quick in hope that they may be of use to some one. Glad they were for you my friend :)

I am going to replace some of my snaps with bigger and stronger ones as some did pop open while doing scale testing but they are great for not having to reach under the armour and fiddle with buckles.

Thanks for the compliments and checking my thread out. Won't have any updates for a week now as waiting on PVC foam board and a circle cutter for my ears to turn up in the mail.

Tom.

What part did you start with and what part did you end with when Assembling the back? I just tried putting the back together and started with all the middle spine pieces and when I was about done I was going to work on the Shoulder area and found it wouldn't line up so I'm having to scrap it and just use it as a learning experience.

Re: Dracks Ironman MK VI Build. (page1 includes info on foam armour building)

I started with the spine first and worked my way out. I can't remember where I ended up though sorry. I do remember having issues with the shoulders but the pep temps are more of a guide some times. I modified them to work with the bits I had done so far. When you cut your templates out always hold them up to the next piece to make sure they will fit. I never cut all the bits out then build. It takes a bit longer to do each piece as you go but means your parts always work.

Thanks for there reply. I'll try it piece by piece this time.

What thickness of foam did you use on the back and front. I have 6mm and smaller and just got some 12mm. It seems like the thicker might be easier to work with on the larger pieces, and I think I read on here you said you were at least 6 ft tall. What scale did you use on you back? I know it's trial and error but I wanna make sure I'm in the right ball park. I've already had to scrap one back already. Don't wanna waste another.

How Rigid does the Plastidip make the foam? Is it similar to fiber glassing in terms of strength and Rigidity? Just trying to decide between platidip or fiberglass for my foam suit I am Building.

it's not a resin, it doesn't make it rigid.

It's a rubberised coating. People use it to seal the foam before painting.
Make sure to research the products before you buy them

I used 10mm foam for the whole suit (except the helmet) and my back scale was 25.400371. I did make my back and chest on the large side though to make sure the helmet didn't look to big. The shoulders were scaled up quite a bit too.
