DeadMau5 Head build- "EvilMau5" *PICS on last post*

Got a con this upcoming weekend and a local group decided to get together to make our own deadmau5 heads. Probably started later than we should have but so far we've come along way in 3 weeks. This is just of my personal one. Originally, we were all thinking of doing star wars themed ones, however, while one member is still making something along those lines, we decided to stray away from it as it looks like those Disney vinylmation figures!

I started on Feb 28th, so these are a few of the WIP images from the build. Need to finish it by this Wednesday!

This is loosely based off of this concept from a design contest. I really like it, but I didn't really care much for the extra details

Mock up. Note, the ears were coated in a thick layer of wood-glue which acts as a sealer and hardener since they are made from a semi-rigid pink insulation foam

Added the Velvet to the eyes...
(Yea, there's a slight wonk on the right one, but I don't mind it)

Overall, the build is not difficult. Though starting at the end of February and getting to this point is nothing short of a miracle. I spent a good 4-5 hours yesterday just wrapping the velvet around the head. I do not wish that horrible burden upon anyone. I got through it with considerable colorful language and frustration induced- breaks. It's not perfect by any means, but came out better than it could have. I had to ultimately break it up into 3 sections; top half, front-lower jaw to half-way and then a 3rd section to cover the lower rear. Fortunately since I have this switch detail, it covers the nastiness that is underneath it!

Things to note:

I didn't include every WIP picture, so there's somethings that were done not shown here, such as the installation of the hard-hat. and other hard-ware placement.

What's left:

- Cover the ears with velvet
- Make a stand-in/temporary mouth. We purchased a sheet of perforated aluminum (just like some of the real Mau5 heads have) and hired a fabricator to form them, though, I cannot say yet if he will have it done in time for us, so I will be making a temporary mouth using 1/2" wire mesh and red stretch fabric
- Finish the giant switch detail; I need to sculpt the actual static switch, alone with the giant screw. The "GOOD" and "EVIL," I will be making a reverse stencil, apply it to a piece of clear thin plastic with the words in reverse, spray it black, remove the reversed stencils, so that when you look from the other side, the words are clear through with the black covering everything else, and so it's perfectly shiny on the outside. I will do that for both words, however, I will have a red-back light behind the "EVIL."
- Solder the wires and batteries. mount the red LEDs behind the "EVIL" sign.

So yea, I've got a lot to do still....

Re: DeadMau5 Head build- "EvilMau5" variation/Custom

Alright well I had to make some decisions last night. Given that I am down to the wire with this, I decided to hold off from trying to make the giant switch and screw for now. I just don't think I'll have enough time to pump it out and make it look right. So, as a temporary thing, I took the plate and covered it with the extra velvet, but decided to leave the bolts as is as I really like the look of it despite not being what I originally intended.

What I spent my time last night was covering the ears. While it wasn't nearly as difficult as the head, it did take a very long time since I decided to use stitch wizard tape to make the seam line. Overall I think they came out really well so it's one less thing to worry about now. Not having to build the switch plate up also alleviates that stress too. I've put back in the hard hat and wore it around. It's considerably heavy, but gotta figure between the ears, a fiberglass-covered head and everything else, it's a lot of weight. Just gotta be careful at the convention or where ever I decide to wear it.

I received notice that the metal mouths should be formed and ready by tonight so I will hopefully be able to get that in and get to work fitting it in place. I'd ideally like to make it hinged so that I can swivel it up if needed, but I will have to wait and see just how well the fit is.

So, with the exception of the mouth, and the minor wiring, it's essentially "finished" for Megacon

Re: DeadMau5 Head build- "EvilMau5" variation/Custom FINISHED

Alright, well, for all intents and purposes, it's finished. The metal mouth came in yesterday so I got right to work on it. Needed some more shaping to get it to sit right. Still could have a better curve but I don't have time to perfect it right now, so I had to install it and get it as close as possible. Just glad to be done with it!

Build took exactly 20 days. Never again!

Niiice.

Im working on a 1:4 (ish) Mau5 head for the shelf and it's been a slow mover, to get this much done in 20 days is good work.

Thanks! I can't imagine it'd be hard to do a smaller version. This certainly is not a small prop/costume piece by any means, so I think you'd be fine lol. The fact that I have it completed now I really can't believe. It's weird. I don't usually do scratch builds this fast. Oh well

This turned out to be a bigger hit than we anticipated!
