Hi, welcome to the RPF.

The best thing to do is use pictures for reference. I haven't ever seen any patterns per se. I am in the process of having a new Vader cape made and I used photos from the film, promotional shots and reference pics from other quality fan made capes to make mine.

You may find some people here willing to share specific information, others may not. Good luck in your search. If I can help please feel free to PM me at any time.

some sites to aid you on your search. The sith training temple you have to sign up for, but it's easy and doesn't take long.

Your going to find that gettting accurate info on vader is like pulling teeth; your best bet is to look out side the RPF you will learn more. I have found that people that think they know vader know nothing and the people that do know will tell you little or next to nothing.

I dont think that is always the case. It is true in some circumstances but not in others.

I know a lot about Vader (I dont know if I consider myself an expert) and I share on a regular basis with people who have shown up here as wanting to learn for the right reasons and not for personal profit. I have gathered a lot of information from people who have the reputation for not sharing. It may take some time to get some of the more "inside" stuff but hang in there. Once people can see your intentions are noble then you will find information comes easier.

Depending on the level of accuracy you're looking for...you can source a lot of these patterns yourself. For example, the leather bodysuit consists of a pair of pants, shirt and vest....you can make it a 1, 2 or 3 piece but the basic pattern is still a pullover, vest and pants...pretty easy to find patterns. The details can be found from screen caps, stills etc, such as the ribbing on the suit and gloves.

The screen accurate capeset has many small details that are hard to find and challenging to work into a useable pattern. However, basic cape patterns are easy to find and sew together. If this will be a costume that you will wear and you are looking for a reasonable facsimilie of Vader, then these basic patterns work. Here's a basic cape pattern from a fellow member's site...

However, if you are looking to match every screen detail....info is very tough to find. Start researching!

There have been many good discussions here about Vader and there are known providers here of helmets, codpieces, suits, belts, chestboxes, shins, etc. There's a difference between getting info for a reasonably accurate costume and getting info for what the original pieces looked like...the former being much easier than the latter. I have found that the people that think they think those that know everything know nothing, know nothing themselves .

Vest, shirt and pants? huh. I thought it was just a jacket and pants. Interesting...See, there is plenty of knowledge to be learned on this site by several vader people(just look for people that have either darth or vader in their name ) Gino is another person to talk to.

Actually, and this may just be a pipe dream.............but someone casually mentioned to me some time back that they knew another individual that was going to release some super duper accurate patterns for sale...........of all sorts of Vader and other costume patterns and that the information came from a reliable source.

I have absolutely no idea what they are referring to and am quite skeptical as always.........but it would be a cool notion to ponder. It would rock if it actually came true and had substance. It would have saved me 10 years of research that incidentally keeps going and going and going. You can learn a new detail about your favorite costume once daily if you spend enough time pouring over photos and books.

Several people out there have patterns of their costumes...........some are more accurate than others.......but those folks don't intend to let their patterns go as they are making the costume parts themselves............would be a bit silly to be honest. However, if someone is brainy enough to actually assemble and sew one of these vader costumes themselves.................they are brainy enough to create their own patterns.

For those of you with the desire to create by hand rather than hire it out...............try this:

Take a 12" Vader doll. Take some paper towels and tape together a pattern that fits your tiny mannequin. Make it nice and full like the film suits etc....

Now scale it up 6X .........and divide the parts into sections that will fit fabric that is either 45" wide or 60" wide depending on availability. Don't forget to add 1/2-1 inch to every single edge of each piece to allow for a seam.

Now sew it up and create your masterpiece.

For me it's quite difficult, but not impossible. Most of your local seamstresses can help you do this pattern making if you show them what you strive for...........give them a basic idea of what the piece looks like all laid out flat.............and how tall and wide you are..........they are pretty smart folks if they do this for a living. Not only that, but they can do all the assembly and finishing if you grow tired of messing it up yourself.

    Good luck!!!

    Dave

Interesting ideas Vaderdarth...time to get a Marmit Vader to use as a template!

I'm sure you do, GundamZeppelin, and as always I enjoy our discussions .
