Jul 26, 2012 - The Dark Knight Cowl (HELP NEEDED) #1

    RE: HELP NEEDED

    Hi all,

I'm new to this & I recently began working on a Batman (Dark Knight) Cowl.
I'm not totally new to making costumes as I made a Caesar Commodus form Gladiator costume for last Halloween.

Anyway, I began browsing the forums for guides on how to make a Dark Knight cowl with what I have around the house & this is what I came up with...

Started with a plastic bag (w/ holes cut for eyes & mouth), then duct taped it to get the shape of my head. Once that was done, I stuffed in with news paper & began to build up the shape with more duct tape and pieces of cardboard. Lastly, I used hot glue to build out some more definition.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do to smooth it out and make it more wearable? Maybe some sort of moldable material that I could also paint over once I smooth it out?

    C&C Appreciated
    Thanks

The fact that you started with plastic limits your options considerably. If you can get a hold of some fibreglass and resin etc. that would be a good place to start. After you have fibre glassed it you can you auto body filler to give definition and shape and for any highlight you want to add. Personnaly, while your cowl is pretty iompressive for a home made option, I would stick to the pepakura method. But then again, I am a pephead so I may be a little bit discriminating.

Also, once you add a piece for the neck and the cape, it will give more definition to the cowl which may change or alter how you want to finish the project.

Yeah, I'm too impatient to put together one of those pepakura models lol
Thanks a lot for your help though. I really know nothing about fibre glass or resin, are they in liquid form? Where can I get it? and are they expensive?
