    Jul 20, 2012 - Corinthian Era Helmet #1

    Hey.............

This is kinda off topic, since it's not from a movie... There's bound to be something similar to this in something..

But I just wanted to share a pep I've been doing. It's a late 6th Century style Corinthian helmet. It's not to scale or anything... Just done by eye. For sizing I used dung0beetle's Magneto since that fit my head perfectly.

Just one problem before I upload the pep (assuming anyone wants it).

I don't know what went wrong...

Some of the image appears flipped... How would one fix this!? lol

Blender is my weapon of choice.

EDIT: Oh yeah, there are no double ups on vertices or anything, I already checked that.

Thats fantastic !! I look forward to downloading that, if I may. Not quite sure how you arrived at 16th cent., wouldn't it be about 5th cent. BC ? Any chance you could do a Roman Murmillo style gladiator helmet ?
Again, really great work ! -Jason

Kickpunchers has a more accurate nasal, dungbeetles looks like a scan of a cheap Indian repro, no offence intended.

Looks like deleted faces in the back and consequently some flipped normals.

It's fixed now and unfolded.. I cut it out and started assembly and found a few things a bit off but due to lack of paper I decided to fix those things in the body filler stage. I'll post pics, hold up.

Hey sure man I'll finish up with this and my renaissance mask then I'll have a go at that gladiator.. In the mean time, could you get me some good reference pics (:

LOL I meant 6th century. The '1' was a typo thanks for pointing that out.

Personally I wouldn't go overboard with tweaking your design, I think the lines look very classical, but its your baby. Check out http://www.kultofathena.com/images%5CDS14_l.jpg though, I like your nasal better.

About the murmillo helmet, here are a couple of examples,

    http://penelope.uchicago.edu/~grout/encyclopaedia_romana/gladiators/murmillohelmet.jpg

perhaps less adorned would be easier

Sorry about the awkward links, I'm not much of a poster.
    Keep up the great work!

Well it was hard to find references of my helmet being worn, so when I put it on the peaks of the chin piece extruded from my face quite dramatically. I felt like this wasn't right, but as I said - I couldn't find any decent reference pictures except for this:

In this image the peaks are touching his skin the whole way down. They don't extrude at all. I'm not meaning at all for mine to be to scale or anything, but it was inspired by several different kinds of helmets, but I do want some accuracy.

I also found this, which supports what I currently have though:

The small side-on picture resembles mine being worn. The peaks at the chin are quite far from the chin. This is what I felt I should make the change illustrated in the side-on view in my last post. And rounding the forehead part should make it sit flatter on the face.

Lastly, that helmet you've shown me looks like fun! As you said, the less adorned version will probably be better suited to my abilities and a heck of a lot easier to pep.

That second image will prove a perfect refernce shot for scaling. Is to to scale of any kind? I understand that helmets varied by region and forger so it's hard to make a "scale" helmet.

Just noticed a major flaw so far lol the brim thing hasn't been widened yet

Edit: Fixed, and this illustrates how I (quite literally) applied your reference image:

    Done baby. Woo.

    http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/5753/donemx.png

The bordered piece is the final product, rotated to it's proper orientation.

I decided it would be best to not pep the circles into the faceplate, simply because it would be a nightmare to make in paper craft. If you plan on foam building then I suppose you might get away with it. Let me know what you need.

It's not unfolded yet, I can do that if you need me to, otherwise I'll pm you the .obj

So I'm happy to make other models by request. Maybe I'll do a page in the junkyard or something.

Thats AWESOME, thanks so much!!! I dont mean to look like an imbecile, how do I print it ? I've only done one pep before, and it was kind of a click and print thing.
Thanks again, you should check-out that Kult of Athena site, they have several views of two slightly different, but both exceptional Corinthian helms.

    Corinthian Helmet.pdo - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download

Righto, here is unfolded Corinthian, A4 paper, fits my head pretty normally. None of the above changes have been applied, as I said, I'm unsure what exactly is accurate so it's hard to judge.

Cap Shield New.pdo - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download

Here is also my Captain America shield. From what I was told by people on a different thread, it's to scale. It's 25" by a small fraction over 3". There is no star as of yet, I figured it would be easier to do later. With a star, it would be almost 3.25" deep, which I believe is to scale.

The colours aren't correct, I just put them on there for fun.

I'll start unfolding the Murmillo a bit later. I'm jamming Assassin's Creed right now, besides, the Corinthian should take you a while.

I spoke with KickPuncher last week, he was supopoed to send me the file unfolded. Unfortunately, he is very very very busy. I dont want tobug him too much. When I get the file, I will post it here ( if he allows me ).
I too have some unfinished business with the murmillo.
