    Jun 21, 2012 - Carbon Fiber War Machine- 8.21- Completed #1

    Hey Guys,

So this is my second War Machine I have built. This is for a client in Southern California. After some long discussion, I talked him into letting me do something different by using carbon wrap to do the silver highlights of the suit.

Credit to Stealth for the files. I did my own custom unfolds based on how I like to construct the suit.

This builds is on about week five. I have some little parts to add and change, but I am pretty close to the final electronics. I got some plans for the guns I am pretty excited about.

There will be no giant spinning gun on this one. Not going down that road twice.

    Here is the old build.

    On to the new stuff!

    Dip. Lots of Dip.

I am not happy with these pics. The lighting in my place is terrible at night and iphone flash blows.

I'm so disappointed... The build looks great, I just thought I was going to see a carbon fiber War Machine and I got all excited... LOL

Seriously though, great job, and the build looks fantastic with the textures.

    Thanks guys.

    @doc and msleeper...

I counted, and this was the 8th EVA helmet I have made. All but 3 hit the trash. I don't think there is much a trick besides time, patience, practice, and lots of sharp blades.

LOL.... So Ohio has crappy liquor laws.

Handle of Red Label in Cleveland.... 54.97

Handle of Red Label in Chicago... 29.99

So we run booze across state lines like champs. You also get a deal if you buy a case at a time FYI. (Case being six bottles)

Buying mass quantities of scotch makes me feel more like Tony Stark.

Hate to say it, but the trick is using thinner foam. Really the 1/2" stuff is not ideal for Iron Man / War Machine builds at all. I've trashed 2 chest pieces, two arms, a shin, and a bunch of cut-out-but-not-assembled foam because I used 1/2" and it was fighting me the whole way. Don't get me wrong, you did a great job with it given the material. But next time you make a suit, do yourself and your wallet a favor and buy thinner material. Best Step makes 1/4" interlocking tiles, you get 6 to a pack instead of 4.

mehhhh. I use 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 2mm and 4mm. There is no one thickness to use. For robustness, I use 1/2 or 3/8 wherever I can.

All my problems with breaking/tearing/ripping have all been where I strained a thinner section of foam.

Looks great so far. Thanks for sharing your experience and experimenting with new materials. I was thinking of using vinyl wrap for my iron man suit too. A few questions...

+ Does carbon wrap stick well to the foam? Or did you spray on a few layers of plastidip first?

+ What is the brand of carbon fiber wrap you are using? And from where did you purchase?

+ Are you seeing any warping of foam or pieces not fitting once carbon wrap is applied?

    GFX-

The wrap does not stick well at all. It seems to be better with a few layers of dip on it. A very thin layer of contact cement seemed to be the way to go.

I used metrofx from Amazon. The silver was pretty good, the red I got was pretty junk.

I have had to run the heat gun over the wrap a few times to straighten it out as it settles. It is not a perfect process. I would recommend making the pieces you wrap as stiff as possible.

For my second build, I am only doing the arm guns. The shoulder mounted rotating barrel was a beast last time.

Looks great. Any way you could cover the multicolor leds on the bottom of the arm with a clear red plastic?

i second that, also i'm considering doing the same thing for my suit, but since its a mark 4 with lots of compound curves i dont know whether or not the wrap will make bubbles, so my questions are does it bubble? and are you using vinyl or the pvc sheet stuff?

    the emblems are badass XD
