    Sep 1, 2012 - Captain America Q's. #1

Does anyone know of a decent costume to use as a base costume for Cap? I've never done this type of thing before and I am beginning to think that this could be both a good way to start out and could be a good way to save money. I'm working on a pretty tight budget so anything that saves money is an immediate plus. Any info/ideas would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

It depends on which version you're wanting to do. If you use the search function for this part of the forum you will find a fair few TFA Cap and Avenger Cap costumes that people have begun with a base from Ebay or similar, and also quite a few that have started from scratch. Either way it's a good place to pick up ideas and tips etc.

Totally agree with what dox86 says. Lots of people I know on here started with the base from ebay. If you are wanting to save money, that would be one way if you don't want to be sewing yourself crazy. Something I have seen also is instead of looking for the perfect fabric (hard to find and can be a bit expensive), I've seen people use their old jeans that they were going to throw out. That also helps because you don't have to worry about following a patterned line. Then maybe you can paint them on after if you really want those lines. But little by little is the best. you don't notice it come out of your budget if it's $5,10, or $20 at a time. The biggest buy but most worth it is going to be a helmet, unless you want to make that yourself too. Which could be fun project, but depending on your time frame...

    Best of luck!

As P4r4dox86 said, what version are you interested in?

For classic Cap, three athletic shirts at you sew back together for one red, white and blue shirt. Use left over bits of the blue shirt for your cowl/hood and get a pair of baseball pants.

For TFA Hero, the cosplay suits are a good base for conversion and there are all kinds of builds on RPF for the accessories.

For Ultimates WW2, other than the mask and jacket, it is just buy and assemble with a repaint of an M1 helmet. I made what, those that don't sew, would consider a pattern of both.

For TFA Rescue, would be the easiest and quickest of the movie outfits to assemble since everything is on the market and you can start to experiment making your own elements.

And, Welcome to the Cap team.

Well, either I'm just too picky or I have too clear of a vision for what I want to do. haha. I'm aiming for a classic Cap look like this one from Marvel: Ultimate Alliance:

And I want to mix it with some small elemets from The Avengers like the little shoulder chevrons and ear covers on the helmet, small stuff like that.
So... I HEREBY DECLARE THAT MY PROJECT WILL BE FROM SCRATCH! Haha

    Too easy.

Stretchy athletic fabric for the shirt, baseball pants, high top jumpboots recolored, steamshovel method gloves with the addition of the pouches, a custom pistol belt, Ultimates style pep helmet with under hood and either steel or aluminum shield of your choice.

This will be a great build to watch.

Edit: if you want the actual scales give this fellow a look. http://www.therpf.com/f24/full-lengt...merica-158783/

Yup, what Fly said. You should be fine using stretch atheletic fabric, the only thing will be whether or not you want to try and get the scale-like look on the upper blue portion of the shirt that seems to be present in that pic, unless I'm seeing something wrong.

The helmet portion of it seems almost to be made of the same fabric as the top, so you might get away with making just a fabric cowl rather than actually having a full helmet, judging from that pic.

Either way, goodluck with your build and keep us updated on your progress.

Aha! I forgot to mention the scales part. That is the only part of the Classic Cap look that I never much cared for. My plan is to instead go over it with the honeycomb type pattern (similar to many Spidey build, and borrowed from SDUK, who is building Captain Britain). I want to give it a textured look but avoid the scales. I'll be posting a WIP thread soon. Hopefully within the next week. =)Thanks for the tips and support guys. =)
