Jun 6, 2012 - Captain America The First Avenger Project #1

It's been a long time since I took on a replica costume project and I've been fighting the urge for a while, but finally buckled and decided to take on a Captain America TFA style costume.
I'm a huge fan of this costume, so am hoping I can do it justice!

I'm going to be using the HelloCosplay jacket & trousers as the base suit and upgrading from there.
I decided early on to go for real vintage WWII gear for as many of the additional details as possible (gloves, boots, pouches, belts, holster etc) so it may not end up being 100% accurate, but I don't want it to look brand new and over all I really want it to look and feel functional.

If you're not familiar with the costume, it's this one:

Here's the parts I've put together so far:

WWII Gloves: - British Dispatch Riders Gauntlets

WWII - Belt & bandolier: - British Officers Sam Browne Belt & Sash

    WWII Holster: - U.S stamped 1911 Holster

Hikz fantastic belt buckle: - Search the JY for these

WWII style tags (accurate text thanks to the Profiles auction)

I like those authentic WWII items you have. The Hellocosplay suit looks like a solid foundation from what I have seen. Thought about picking one up myself.

Thanks guys, - after focusing on mainly screen used props for a while, I forgot how much I enjoyed these projects. I'm having a lot of fun doing it.

Todays project was the chest pouches. After failing to find anything I was happy with. I decided to make them as stand ins until something better pops up in my searches.
I started with this brown leather from a damaged seat from a 1941 vintage car - I've got a decent amount of it, so I'll also be using it to make the leg straps for the holster and the liner for the helmet too.

I've updated the first post with a little more info on some of the parts incase they're helpful to anybody doing this on their own TFA projects and they want to use the same parts I did.

I'm not sure if there will be enough of the leather left over for more pouches, but if there is I'll happily make you some. If not, when I replace them these ones are all yours!

I've got a few options for the boots, but haven't found anything in my size yet, so still looking!

The belt pouches are on their way to me from another member, I believe they're French ammunition pouches, once they're here I'm going to attach the belt buckle at the same time to make sure I get the right positioning.

May I ask what drove you towards the hello cosplay suit and not the ebay one?
Thanks for putting me on the list for first dibs on the belts, hopefully if you have leather left I can pay you for some or trade something if you wish..

I can't find the pictures now, but I was following a thread on another forum where the HelloCosplay costume was used and I was very impressed by how it looked. Then a few months ago I saw one in person that someone had done various upgrades to and some fantastic weathering and I couldn't believe it was one of the cosplay costumes I had seen on eBay and dismissed as junk! So ate humble pie and ordered mine! - it got caught up with all their pre-Avengers orders though and now Customs have it - but I should have it in hand in just a few days and will post some pictures of it.

I'm just winging it really. I just made paper templates by eye and kept improving them untill I was happy then made it out of the leather.

The sam browne belts are a bit tricky - they come in various dimensions, I found them from 55mm width all the way up to 75mm. Hikz buckle is for a 70mm belt though, so it's worth asking lots of sellers and keeping your fingers crossed.

Is it your intent to make the TFA uniform with as many historical pieces as possible?

There are examples of one piece Herringbone Twill uniforms (HBT) that may have been the basis for the movie costume.
Sorry that I don't have any links to ones for sale.

I'm not going to go too crazy with it, but certainly all the accessories.
The belt pouches arrived and I love them. They could do with being a darker brown to more closely match the other parts, but I haven't decided whether or not I want to mess about with them yet.
After picking up the 'Disguise' shield for £22 on eBay, I decided a quick blast of gloss varnish to improve the look a little. It's only a place-holder, but nice to have a shield to be going on with.

That shield actually looks alot nicer in your shot than the shots they use to sell it!! I ended up buying the Deluxe Metal one as it has the adjustable straps on the back so I can put it on my back... but it was painted comic book style... I have sanded it down, primed it and then sprayed it with the anodized paints to get the movie colours, am currently working on some templates to stick on the center star then respray that so it as the inner star design.... it's turned out ok up to now, but I will be investing in an aluminium one in future, jst in the space of 4/5wks I have already ploughed upwards of £600 or so and still got a few more adjustments to make....so the expensive shield can wait for now lol I am loving your belt though dude it's awesome!!!!! I personally would rub the pouches down with some leather dye and they will look great

I do love those pouches and belt!!
Those shields are pretty cool! but the whole reason I was doing the suit was to go with my shield so I am pretty lucky on that.
But your doing a superb job keep up the great work

I am struggling to find a good belt that will fit the buckles on offer, they are all to thin that I have looked at..... I may end up making a fake buckle from foam and coating it in a plastic resin or something then spray it and stick it to whatever belt I replace mine with

I've decided I will be darkening down the pouches, I want them to match the other parts a little closer really.

The HelloCosplay suit also arrived today and I'm very impressed with the quality. I've got a list of things I want to change on it already though, but upgrading it was always the plan.

I'm going to take a few photos and post again this evening with more info

    'HelloCosplay' Base suit:

I'm really impressed with it, but the obvious issues from trying it on are:

    - The collar, despite giving my neck measurement, is much too large and sits awkwardly. It could do with being much tighter
    - The uneven leatherette chest star has to go!
    - The shoulder straps are much too long and really don't look that nice. I'll be replacing these with some made with the vintage leather.
    - The sleeves tend to wrinkle and ride up your arms, so I will be adding a thumb strap to each sleeve.
    - The ab section also rides up when you move around so I'll be adding some clips into the waistband of the trousers to hold it in place.
    - The ab section is padded, but not the chest, I'm a slim guy and it gives the impression of a belly, but of course the belt/pouches will cover this a little.
    - The shoulder D-rings need to be replaced with more accurate ones.
    - The back - needs to be more accurate and add the buckle.
    - Needs weathering

I'll be seeing to these things over the next few days and will post updates as I go

Looks good mate, I really like the shoulder bits with the detailed padding, but I couldn't be doin with adding all the straps etc to the back hence me goin with the denim one, which I was really impressed with when I recieved mine yesterday

Not really an update, but just thought I'd post my Tesseract replica. It's a solid block of acrylic with blue LEDs cast right inside it and exactly the right dimensions of the original
