Jul 31, 2012 - Bronx Boba in da House! Fett Helmet scratchbuild Wip #1

Hey there I have never done any type of replica costume work till now I was inspired by "ROSSKOW's" Boba Fett helmet build which is looking nice and it's his first attempt, my main forte on the RPF here has been making scratchbult models like my APC and Arkham Batmobile kits but I always wanted to try to make some kind of helmet so I started with the templates found on the Dented Helmet site. I layed the cheek bone templates on with spray adhesive on styrene instead of cardboard then I cut them out. I then did the dome with foam sheeting that you can get at the home depot like $20 bucks for an 8 foot piece. The back area was done with layered cardboard I need to adjust the rear profile it's to straight and needs to flare out I put a coat of spackle on the dome to fill in the pores. I will fiberglass the cardboard area or slap resin on it to harden it, and will bondo the dome and will use to Magic sculpt to do the raised areas for the visor area this is my 1st prop so here is where Im at with 2 days of work so we'll see how it turns out.

Small update day 3, I sanded the spackle over the foam just waiting for my supplies to arrive in the mail. Yesterday I went out to the post office had to catch a bus and a train and the bus was filled with a million screaming camp kids, I said I'm not going through that again I'll order my stuff in the mail no rush to finish this I want to do it nice for my first prop piece the visor is just painted on it's an illusion Lol but it's starting to look like Fett's head gear.

Okay guys still working on Bobby Fett from da Bronx Lol. I have done more sanding on this dome then when I did the body work on my Nissan 240sx but he's starting to take shape, today I was making the raised area of the visor mandible section. I just layered up 3 cut out templates and glued them together, I'm not to worried about how clean the visor area is because if I do mold this that area would be cut out anyway so enough Jaw jacking and unto the pics.

So why did you choose to do the dome that way instead of using the part that came with the WOF templates you used for the rest of it?

Are you planning to wear this, or is it just a shelf prop?

I still haven't finished mine, other costumes have taken priority for this Dragoncon.

Anyways, here are a couple shots from my build showing the style of dome from the templates.

I fiberglassed the inside for strength, and used body filler on the outside for shape. This picture is a couple rounds of filler and sanding ago, but still shows the idea. I have yet to get fresh pictures.

Yeah I saw the dome templates as double work because I would have to resin or glass it then still bondo it so using the foam would just eliminate that step and I made the helmet just as a pattern so that a mold could be pulled of off it, plus I was trying to use materials I had laying around so far maybe $16 dollars spent just on the Bondo bodywork kit. Yours is also shaping up.

I was thinking that your method looked like something you'd be making a mold of with the foam dome.

This one is just a one off, in the future when I know what I really want to do for a more custom design I'll build it, mold it, then cold cast it.

I don't know if this was on purpose or if you're really concerned, but the bucket is a bit off from being screen accurate.

The side of the bucket where the ear caps attach to should be part of the raised section, and it has same extra size to it past just what the ears cover. I followed the templates in this regard exactly.

    Yours

    Mine so far

    Reference photo

The whole red section is the raised part.
One thing I chose not to keep because I'm doing a custom mando is that the one side the ear cap base goes above that ring at the base of the dome. The range finder side is the one that goes up, you can see how high the ear cap is in the reference photo. The other side doesn't do this though.

I'm not posting to be critical at all, just wanted to point out an observation. Good luck.

Thanks Rosskow I basically approach it like a pattern making the basic shape so I'm working on one side the outside instead of doing the inside resin to make it hard then doing the outside. How is yours coming along?

Thanks Al!I added the side plates that the ear pieces sit on top of and made the bottom half of the range finder, that little sucker took a few hours to make now the top half and then the other side and then the rear vent area, range finder and add the dent and this will be a done deal if it comes out decent it will get brushed with some silicone.

Damn man... I love how you approached the dome. My magneto helmet has been a ***** in a half getting it the shape I want the dome.

I will def give that a try on my next build

    Looking good so far.

Thanks Magneto, yeah foam is very vesatile it can be shaped into anything, and for a helmet you can vac form over it or just take a mold of it to get a hollow copy.

Alright good deal, I've just never seen that done in a separate step before.

It's coming along great, I like it a lot. You obviously have some good shaping skills.

I want to make the rear vent section next, that's a seam on mine that will need reinforcing, but the majority of it will get cut out anyways. I'll just add some extra fiberglass around the whole vent assembly when I mount it.
