hoping i finish her costume, before the 30th...her mom has always been in-charge of her halloween costumes since she was able to walk...so i guess its my turn, its a Thursday here so tomorrow after work i can resume doing something to try and finish it, asked our friend to sew a cape for her. anxious to see if it will turn out ok. will definitely post pics when she does her first test fit...thanks for all the cool comments

Insanely incredible work. And I love that your daughter was so impressed, she wanted her own version. That must have been a great compliment.

Can't wait to see the finished products.

thanks

not much done...just her gloves, painted an old pair found lying around the storeroom...still deciding if its a corset or just a black top with the bat logo velcroed on, her cape is still at our friends house...oh and i smoothened the cowl's forehead and cheeks a bit...anyways ...heres is what we have so far..

my little girl is growing up...she was concerned that her belly is big and is getting embarrassed with a form fitting costume (hmmmm... the corset doesnt seem to be such a bad idea after all)

comments?suggestions?

thanks for looking

Omel dude, this is awesome!!!

Quick question though if you don't mind - the plumbers putty you're using, does it dry out / harden? The only stuff I can find in the UK looks similar, but claims not to dry....

yep hardens like a rock, the cannister actually contains two separate containers, clay like substance you mixed together ( adhesive and hardener, if you mix in equal parts you have about 5-10 minutes before it becomes unworkable,so i use small amounts at a time, hardens in a couple of hours, easy to smoothen, just wet fingers will do it for you

Both versions are looking great! That belt is insane... the mask.. everything

A big BOO on body image issues at her age, but if she is really self conscious, a "corset' could help, or just have her wear her bathing suit underneath.. something to mimic the compression clothing that is popular for undersuits without going overboard. Target does sell something called "Assets" that is a spanx knockoff, but that may not be a direction you need to go in in the name of costuming.

Or just make her an awesome billowy cape! Once she is dressed in all black with the body armor on, no one will notice or care, and neither should she. She will have the most amazing costume in the neighborhood

Re: Batman & Batgirl WIP budget build pic heavy(...some stuff done for kid's costume)

i guess she didnt realize that she gained some weight till i told her she did ( my bad), she has not been biking, swimming and ice skating for a couple of months ( rink is being renovated, papa hasnt gone biking with her on weekends, typhoon season , hmmm no particular reason why we havent swam in a bit), but she is looking forward to the 30th, coz she is joining a halloween costume contest, got her a compression top so no need for the corset, hoping to finish her suit before then. need to pick-up the cape we had sewn for her, hope it turns out well, will be posting pics of the contest and trick or treat as well.

thanks for the kind words.

Re: Batman & Batgirl WIP budget build pic heavy(...some stuff done for kid's costume)

picked up my daughter's cape this evening and.......... gahhhh...the inside is a wrong shade of yellow , and the width is a little small for the dramatic cape spread....what to do?, what to do?....mall is closed... so scrounge the storeroom again, i remember we had a shower curtain liner that we got some months back that we never used because it was a wrong shade of yellow (mango yellow) for my wife's taste..had to turn the whole storeroom upside down to find it....but find it i did...so now i will spend the majority of the night..sewing it over the "tweety yellow" . hope my manual sewing skills are up to par ...because the sewing machine is busted ....got to finish it by morning ..coz the costume contest she will be joining is tomorrow noon

Re: Batman & Batgirl WIP budget build pic heavy(...some stuff done for kid's costume)

well....the contest has come and gone. was able to sew up the cape with the curtain liner. , but......sad news for my kid..she did not win , although she had a blast, lotsa people wanted to have their pics taken with her . my wife positioned herself near the front of the stage to take photos and she overheard the judges' comments on our daughter's costume. the criteria was 40% for theme relevance, 30% for creativity, 20% for stage presence and 10% for audience impact, we were scored pretty ok for all criteria... EXCEPT....creativity...we got low points for this because...(and get this), the judges all thought our kid wore a store bought costume. , come on , dont they know what a store bought costume looks like, there was a slew of kids wearing store bought, run of the mill batman and batgirls, couldnt they tell the difference...sheesh.....rant over, any way, there were over 140 participants, and in fairness the winner was a girl with fairly good avatar costume, then followed by chuckie, an amidala,an elaborate edea from FFvii,a madhatter , will post pics so you can see for yourselves, she was even beaten by a hellboy who did nothing except wear red body paint, black make-up for the beard, inverted plastic cups for the horns, and a trench coat ( gosh....rant part 2 hehehe), (really thought she would have placed in the top seven )

Her costume turned out so great! How did you attach the bat symbol to her shirt/what was it made of? Also, how did you get your cowls so smooth? You inspired me to make my own outfit this weekend, and my headpiece was so lumpy using cardboard/duct tape. Probably I am just inexperienced and rushed, but do you have any tips?

They should have people submit a blurb about how the costume was constructed if they are going to deduct points for storebought! It's not your fault it looks so awesome Glad she had a blast.

Now.. where are your pictures?

thanks bro, the bat symbol on her chest was cut from a vinyl floor tile i attach it via velcro. no secret really to getting the cowl to how it looked, probably a tip i can give is to use smaller pieces of the duct tape first before taping on larger pieces and work your way around it to check where it needs a bit more than other parts it also helps that the person its for is wearing it while you attach more duct tape so you can press it on, i make the rough cowl in a couple of hours ( basic head shape, nose, brows, cheeks, jowl and ears) and spend a couple more making it as duct tape smooth as possible ( not forgetting the duct tape inside as well) before adding the plumbers putty for smoother details, oh and i spray paint it initially to see where improvements can be done, spreading PVA glue all over helps smoothen it, ( kinda like a poor mans version of plastidip i guess). ( several layers of PVA glue and spray paint makes a big difference)

i realized that the judges were after all only mall top execs who didnt know much about costuming, they only see what they like, well anyways,,,you are all correct that the important thing is my kid had a great time, coz most of the other contestants parents wanted to have their kids pics taken with ours....and she was mighty proud of her suit.

was going to wear mine during trick or treat around the village with the kids....but we suddenly had to leave for the wifey's relatives in the province the day after my kids contest ( the 31st)...so...no pics in the suit for me..

Great costumes man! Any completed pics of yours? Anytime stupid judges think it is a store bought costume that is the highest compliment you can get. I get that a lot with my horror costumes, even though no store in the world sells screen accurate horror costumes, just mass produced junk. I love making my own stuff as well, made most of my T2/T3 parts myself as well. Would love ot see full daylight pics of the Batman. Awesome job!
