Another project that I am planning on doing, not on myself though.
Isn't he just gorgeous
Anyone out there ever attempt it?
Have began sculpting the teeth, making a generic set.

Making a clay positive in order to make a gelatin appliance, will post pics soon.
Lenses are proving to be very expensive, might use a cheaper pair.
SWEET! One of my favorite Vamps out there. He scared the sh@t out of me as a kid. Can't wait to watch the progress on this.![]()
Yep! Didn't have the benifit of Russ's mind blowing Barlow mask though, if you want Barlow, you want Russ. (Mr. Barlow) For mine, I got the mask and hands from Death Studios, and then had a buddy, Jusin from Nightowl do some repaint magic. The costume is tough to discern on screen, so I went with a non-descript black hooded jedi cloak. I really liked the silhouette it made.
and just the maks and hands

Fantastic mask!! Really excellent paintjob.
I want to go for a prosthetic version, with full facial movements.
Will use a bald cap, full face prosthetic, prosthetic ears and custom made teeth.
Nearly finished the main facial piece, a few details to add. Going to make either a fibreglass or plaster mould and cast a gelatin piece.
Have started the ears as well.
thats interesting! always thought about doing this being that I already the dome for it!
That guy (Mr Barlow) always scared the crap out of me- I think the look of the creatures from an excellent recent film called "Descent" were inspired by him.

The funny thing is that Barlow looks quite a lot like Count Orlok from "Nosferatu." I haven't read the book, so I can't say that Barlow is the same in the novel. But since King has referred movies in his works, even having to have drawn influence from some of them, it wouldn't be a surprise to me if he did.
Director Neil Marshall has stated that when it came to the Crawlers, he was thinking about it being somewhat like a bat in it's appearance (not just the details like them being blind and being able to use sonar and smell). Of course, I'm sure the creature design and the team that worked on it looked at "Nosferatu" as well. But, for some reason, a lot of people compare the Crawler's appearance to that of Gollum from "The Lord of the Rings" than that to Count Orlok (the making-of documentary on the DVD talks a bit about the design of the creatures. The comparison to Gollum is my own conclusion, having to have read a lot of posts on the IMDb forum for "The Descent". The creature's appearance was the second most talked about topic, the first being "Did Juno deserve it?").

Barlow was inspired by Max Schrecks Nosferatu apparently.
Haven't read the book but he is more human like in it. The 2004 remake has Rutger Hauer as human Barlow!

In the book Barlow is described as looking like a European "Orchestra conductor" with longish wavy dark hair with a streak of gray running through it. Rutger Hauers costume and look and mannerisms are much closer to Kings version then the original mini series Nosferatu type vamp. That being said the original mini series Barlow scared the crap out of me as a kid...far more ancient and elemental then Kings original concept. There was nothing remotely charismatic about him at all....he was a white shark....a primordial killing machine.
Little trivia for ya: Reggie Nadler, who played Barlow in the original, also played the Andorian Ambassador in Star Treks 'Journey to Babel'...apparently he likes being blue....
Reggie Nalder
1979 Barlow certainly was not charismatic, represents pure evil.
He is a great character. Here are a couple of pics of one I painted:

The fact that Barlow was human brought it back to the original book, but that was about the only thing that did.
They ironically touted the new version as being closer to the book, and I didn't see that. They made Ben Meers a journalist instead of a novelist, changed some things around about the characters, let it play out differently than in the book, etc..
On these remakes I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Too many horror remakes being made that pale beside their original inspiration. In the 70's version, Barlow was nothing like in the book, but it WORKED. He has, without a doubt, the scariest film vampire ever IMO--though Geoffrey Lewis in the same film when he rises from the rocking chair in the darkened bedroom and confronts the teacher gets high marks too.
Revisiting this little side project! Probably end up doing the makeup on myself using a baldcap. Pics to follow of the ear sculpt, teeth and gelatin face!
Sweet. Scariest damn vampire since Nosferatu....and, these guys don't sparkle!

Thrashed out a few bits this week.
Sculpted the teeth on a cast of my own teeth, just need to smooth out and then mould them.
Right ear, needs texturing, Barlows skin was rough as!!
Just going to use yellow UV lenses, custom made sclera were proving a little too expensive for just a one off photoshoot.
Check out my avatar, it's a picture Reggie Nalder autographed to me.
AWESOME, Ive been trying to find a way to get a Barlow figure done but could never figure out how. I was searching the net and found you guys talking about Reggie/Barlow. Let me tell you guys somethin. I used to know Reggie Nalder and Jack Young when they were alive and as a matter of fact I HAVE REGGIE'S BARLOW TEETH that I got from Jack Young as well as an 8x10 EXTREME closeup make up shot I had never seen before of Reggie as Barlow. I became freggin obsessed with Salem's Lot as a kid and would talk about it constantly!! That's why I contacted Jack Young Reggie and Morton Greenspoon. I just wanted whatever I could get that had do with this movie even if it was just an autograph.
Thank god I held on to everything. Ive been meening to dig up the teeth from storage but Ive been lazy about it, after seeing this blog I'm going to start looking tonight. I think I put them in with my famous monsters mags. Jack had sent me the call sheets and the teeth along with some stills. Reggie sent me a bunch of stills as Barlow that he signed as well as some letters and cards, b-day etc. I sent him a few to sign too.
I got a long letter from Morton Greenspoon saying I was the first person to ever ask for his autograph. I tried to get the contact lenses but he didn't have them any more. It's funny but as a kid I always loved this stuff and since the actors were mostly all dead when I started getting into this, I figured the next best thing is to contact the makeup guys.
My friend got some things of Jack Pierce that he got from his brother in law and out of that I got some orig makeup stills of Karloff as Imhotep and Chaney as The Wolfman playing with his dog Moose. On the back of those stills is Jack Pierces autograph in pencil.
With Jack Young I initially asked him for a makeup picture of Margaret Hamilton as the Witch and Reggie as Barlow. He didnt have anything on the witch but he had the shot of Barlow (I gotta scan that biotch so you guys can see it) and back in the day these guys thought nothing of taking an original still right out of their own collection and sending it.
Alot of them had said they had never ever had gotten a fan letter before. I thought that was weird because to me they are the ones responsible for creating these characters. Any way, the one thing I almost got but never did was the Barlow skull that was in the coffin.
I had talked about it a few times with Jack but I could never bring myself to ask for it. I didnt want to be a greedy lil bstard. I guess I got over zealous with this stuff. Jack told me he had that skull at the bottom of his stairs in the living room. What a cool place to keep Barlows skull! I don't think his wife liked it there much.
The last I heard from Jack Young was actually his wife sending me an invite to his memorial in Marina Del Rey, but me being in NJ, under age and poor I wasnt going to make it.
With Reggie I talked to him on the phone and we were going to meet in NY at a place called The Barbizon. I think it's a hotel but he never made it. I got a call from his friend, Dwight Grell who told me Reggie had passed away. I was surprised that I got a phone call, it was on the very night he died. I was pretty much devastated beyond words and left my job early. It was a 30 minute drive home at night all alone so you can imagine the tears were streaming. I never got to meet Reggie but he was a great guy and a very caring person. You guys wouldve loved him and I think he wouldve loved being remembered so fondly. He did in fact realize that his "Barlow" was a character that alot of people were great fans of.
Im hoping that maybe I can find someone to make me a Barlow figure. That's something Ive always wanted but I'm not artistically inclined. I had once contacted Olaf Hartvigson the Sideshow sculptor but he wanted almost 1000 dollars just to sculpt the head. I could never afford that. I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me and point me in the right direction. Anyway, thank you for listening to me ramble on...........joey OBrien
