    Jun 26, 2012 - Avengers!Loki Build (crossplay!) #1

Just started on my Loki. I'm specifically doing the scene at the end where he's done up in his... er... hardware. I have the beginnings of a muzzle and I just drafted the pants pattern. Crossing my fingers that they go together well because if not, it doesn't bode well for the rest of the outfit. The pants are the simplest part and even they have those annoying layered straps. :/

Anyway here's what I had on the muzzle as of last night.

It's not much but I think the shape is coming along well. I never knew craft foam could be thermoformed! *evil laugh* I have the pieces sealed and the first coat of silver paint is drying as I type. More soon!

I was about to ask what "Crossplay" was until I saw your picture above. I like the look of the muzzle and the pants just look like a complex puzzle to have to figure out. Lotsa luck and keep us updated.

Yay another gal doing Loki, welcome to the club!

I'm really happy to see somebody is actually doing the pants right rather than just buying, you know... black leather pants. Congrats on going forth with that challenge! And I'm liking the muzzle thus far too, good job on paying attention to detail. Will keep hopping back to see more!

Wheee, high five! The pants actually haven't been nearly as bad as I expected. The only sort of hard part was figuring out which order I had to assemble all the pieces in so it would come out right (ugh, sewing physics). That, and hoping none of my math was off. I've found that as long as I cut strips that are exactly the same width and keep my seam allowances the same, those stupid little wrap layers basically space themselves perfectly. That's REALLY reassuring for the rest of the outfit since those crisscross wrappy bits are EVERYWHERE.

One leg panel studded and painted, next to unpainted for comparison. I admit I was skeptical about using craft foam for basically EVERYTHING on this costume, but I think this paint makes it work.

Muzzle is almost done! Just a couple extra cosmetic pieces on the front and I will be finished with it. I goofed and glued the main pieces on crooked the first time so this is Mark II.

Thanks! I decided to make the accessories to do 'bondage' Loki because it would cover my mouth, which is my girliest feature. Tom Hiddleston has teeny thin lips and I don't at all so if I really want to be convincing I can just slap on the extras and glare at people.

My Loki wig came today! It's a black synthetic (but heat-safe) half wig so I can use my natural (and basically correctly shaped- I guess manly?) hairline instead of spending money on a lace front and maybe or maybe not getting the hairline I want. So here it is, PRE-STYLING. I've tried to blend my brown hair under it a bit because that's how it's going to have to be when I wear it. My real hair is about mid-back and I don't want to cut any of it so the layer that blends back from the front will have to be tucked under once it covers the front of the wig.

I've never seriously styled a wig before and I'm really afraid I'm going to screw it up. I also have no idea how he gets so much lift right at his hairline. Mine won't poof like that no matter how many babies I sacrifice. Any advice?

(edit: swapped the photo for a less distracting one where I used GIMP to dye my hair. )

You can try styling mousse. It volumizes the hair.

Thanks! That sounds pretty easy. I was worried I would have to tease it or something.

I'm glad you like it! It's painfully slow going but I'm trying to do a really stellar job. I expect a ton of Lokis this year and I want to be one of the better ones so compliments are encouraging.

Pants and tunic are coming along! Sleeves are next up, and finishing putting the armor panels on the pants. Sorry about the mess and stripper shoe, I was experimenting with adding height to my costume (since I'm not 6'2" like Tom Hiddleston) and my house generally tends to explode when I sew.

In other news, I'm super excited that I won't have to bind the girls for this one. I have a poorly-fitting corset that tends to smush more than lift so with all the layers on this costume, that will be enough to get rid of the curves!

If its a synthetic wig, mousse will not work (or any hair gel as it needs the protein from your hair in order to work).

    What works well?

Got2B Glued Freeze Spray. I use this religiously
    Aqua Net SUPER HOLD Hairspray
SUAVE MAX HOLD (level 9 or 10) Hairspray series
    Hair Paste (looks like pomade)
    Hair glue

To keep your hair/wig fibers shiny : Motions Oil sheen Spray. It also helps in keeping long fibers in wigs separated so it doesn't tangle up and become a rat's nest

To get the "volume" at his "widows" peak and on the sides, its pretty easy to achieve (I'm assuming that this will be your real hair for these areas). Use a blow dryer set to "high" and spray a light amount of Super Hold hairspray in these areas. Take a Rounded brush and brush from underneath, and blow dry toward the back of your head. Once you have your "poof", lightly spray again (do not over-spray as it will weigh down the hair, and you have to start over). Its also best to work from dry hair

I've been styling wigs for the better part of 10 years. I've worked with both Natural and synthetic fibers.

Love your progress. You gave me an idea on how to attempt his costume for Halloween (yes another gal in love with Loki) and how to approach another costume that has some unique weaving.

    SUPER USEFUL STUFF
Holy crap thanks so much, that is crazy helpful! The wig claims to be heat safe to 400 degrees so do you think I could use a curling iron to get the flips in the back? And maybe set them with freeze spray for good measure?

Also, including the picture I was about to post just to avoid le double posting.

I'm glad you like it! Those stupid weave strips were so intimidating but they're actually really easy. It's all math and keeping your seam allowances perfect. They turned out a little flat for my taste but I can work with it. If you start a thread for your costume let me know so I can check it out.

I would be CAREFUL with a curling iron. Some people are successful, but some have totally ruined their wigs.

The safe way is the Hairspray method. What's nice is if you "mess" up, you simply wash the wig (with a small dab of shampoo in a sink full of water; siwsh your wig around and then rinse thoroughly and dry) , you can start over. Hairspray, blowdryer and some curlers or a good round brush can do much more and give you peace of mind.

I've used curling irons on wigs before, but I don't recommend it for anyone who has never styled a wig before. I've actually used a hair straightener to straighten a wavy wig out.

What about large-diameter hot rollers? Or will a round brush and a blow dryer on high have enough heat to give it a little bit of permanent curl? So I don't have to CAKE it with hairspray...

The wig is way longer than I need so maybe I will practice on the bits that will get cut off?

They should work. Just be careful with anything that generates its own heat.

As they say "less is more". you don't have to cake it with hair spray (otherwise, you are just weighing down the wig)

Hairspray is pretty much liquid plastic in aerosol form. So you're spraying plastic on to plastic (so it works great).

Your hairdryer on high is good enough.

The wig is way longer than I need so maybe I will practice on the bits that will get cut off?
good idea. if you can create a weft of hair (bundle some togehter and seal the end with CAULK - the kind used for bathtubs) , you can practice on that. Just be sure its long enough. If you have a styrofoam head form, just "pin" the weft where the caulk is to the form, and practice away.

Here is a good tutorial on how to make wefts:
