Oct 13, 2012 - Ancient Iron Man Armour (WIP, PIC HEAVY) #1

    My first post!

Inspired by some of the amazing builds on the RPF and a recent visit to Leeds Armouries where I saw stuff like this:

I've started to build an Iron Man suit that looks like it was built five thousand years ago.

Here's the chest piece in progress:

In order to get the Verdigris look I want, I'll following the rough outline Adam Savage described in his Wired piece about the alien space suit.

More to come as I go along. Pretty excited.

Thanks, I was just trying to aquire a feel for weathering effects. In fact, I plan to paint over all of that in order to make it look more like weathered copper or bronze. Then over that with the green/blue wash.

I really hope this thread keeps going. This is an awesome idea and i'm excited to see the progress and to see if it becomes a full ancient suit.

    A quick update:imageuploadedbytapatalk1350213360.848590.jpg

Built more of the suit, primed it and hot glued over the rivets too make it look old:

Will trial the weathering process this afternoon.

    Several Hours later...

I began with priming the plastic with red primer. I used red simply because that was what I had:

Next step was to apply a black acrylic paint using a 'dabbing' motion that gave a rougher, more mottled finish than spray painting:

After than a layer of Copper coloured fast dry enamel, which started to get the colour i wanted and dull down the black a bit.

On top of that went Rub n Buff Spanish Copper applied with a cloth. This stuff is fantastic. Finally, to bring out some of the texture I'd laid down with the first coat of dabble black, I added a light dry brushing with the same black acrylic.

At this point I quite liked what I had and thought long and hard about the final step - the green Verdigris oxidisation of copper. Anyway, I took the plunge and added a dry brush layer of Jade enamel mixed in with some white to achieve a few different shades:

I like it a lot. To me at least it's starting to look like old oxidised copper, like an old Diving Bell found at the bottom of the ocean. I think I need to go (a lot) further to make it look really ancient. Right now we probably are in the 1800's, not anywhere near 5000BC. I'll probably add a wash of the same green/blue to get it deeper into the texture of the armour.

    So far a successful experiment:

I'll be back with an update after I've done the wash and started the helmet.

    Update:

    imageuploadedbytapatalk1350286527.514939.jpg

Working on the helmet using the same high impact polyurethane plastic as the armour. Or... Made from the cheapest plastic dustbin I could find.

The plastic is fairly light but like fibreglass won't be the most comfortable thing in the world. I'll experiment with foam for the limbs, might be an easier material to work with for the more complex bits.

Wow mate, that looks great and is an original take on the armour. Leeds Armouries is a great museum, eh?! I think they were displaying an rpf Iron Man suit there recently? Can't wait to see how you continue with the weathering!

Really like your take on the armour. It's good to see people adding a new approach to there builds. Loving the copper tarnish effect you have really pulled it off.

Congratulations on putting a new spin on a costume which, at least on this forum, has been done to death

Going to be putting any other twists on the base build? A 2000 B.C. Stark Technologies longsword and shield, perhaps?

I began painting the helmet last night. Think I'm going to be inspired my old diving helmets like this one:

    imageuploadedbytapatalk-hd1350506654.702744.jpg

So some of the armour will be old gold, certainly the faceplate on the helmet and the surround of the core. At this point I have no fixed view on what I'm going for re the look of of the suit, we'll just see what happens.

    imageuploadedbytapatalk-hd1350506587.485791.jpg

Lot more work to do but it's a start. The faceplate is silver at the moment so I can pull back the gold color that I'll apply tomorrow.

A little bit of progress tonight. Base colours of helmet added. Weathering and verdigris still needed.

Also played around with some lighter copper shades on the body. Not sure if i like it yet. I think I'll definitely add a more substantial gold ring around the core.
