Alternative To Fiberglassing Pepakura Parts That You Can Use Indoors
Just wanted to share this product with everyone. Some might know and use it already. I'm not sure.
It's EpoxAmite 100 with the 101 fast Hardener for use on Pepakura parts or scratch built parts. Whether they're Cardstock or cardboard. It soaks into it and also fiberglass mat and cloth really well and has a rigid finish once fully cured I used this and it works great and I use it indoors (Is also odourless.) Thanks to VersionUP for suggesting this a long time ago and Matt aka Surreal Studios for reminding me about it again Here's a video of me explaining it briefly with a quick tutorial on applying it. I hope it helps out Great Alternative To Fiberglass Polyester Resin You Can Use Indoors - EpoxAmite 101 Fast EpoxAmite 101 Fast EpoxAmiteŽ 100 Laminating Epoxy Product Information | Smooth-On See if there is a distributor near you Distributor Listing | Last edited by STEALTH; 06-26-2011 at 07:13 PM. |

Re: Alternative To Fiberglassing Pepakura Parts That You Can Use Indoors
Thanks for sharing, Stef. I bought a trial kit of this about 3 months ago and I haven't gotten around to trying it yet.
Mostly because i didn't realize I had to buy the pumps separate. Have some on order now so I'll be trying it soon.Ever try applying it to polyurethane resin? Have thought about using it as a backing on helmet castings to add rigidity. But not sure it would bond. |

I had a crack on a urethane part and sealed it with EpoxAmite and it looks like it fused together fine. Really nice result. Also Vice versa. The smooth-on rep should've let you know to get the pumps. It's pretty thick lol. |

This looks intresting is it non-toxic? Of course gloves are still needed. But I can't use fiberglass resin or bondo anymore so this is definatly a good change for me.

It's fine indoors without a respirator.

plus the one good thing about EpoxAmite is it doesn't get brittle when it puddles like polyester resin. I also saw someone using this with a paint gun, but I can't remember who it was. It also have a high compressive strength from what I've seen.

Yeah, I've seen some pictures on the site which shows it being sprayed on for the application.
But I'm not 100% sure as the catalyst is pretty thick. |

Re: Alternative To Fiberglassing Pepakura Parts That You Can Use Indoors
Sounds cool. I've been doing large Fiberglass/Polyester Resin pulls for a few months now and welcome something I can work on indoors. Only concerns are that it's twice the cost of polyester resin and has a 6-8 hour cure time vs. 90 min.

Will this damage foam if you put it on top of foam?

Re: Alternative To Fiberglassing Pepakura Parts That You Can Use Indoors
I tried a little piece. It just creates a layer of plastic on top and bonds well. Doesn't damage it. It would crack if you over flex it obviously since its plastic.
It would be good for sealing the inside where you join the seams. Kinda defeats the purpose of having a cost effective foam suit though if you throw this product on the list of materials. |

Re: Alternative To Fiberglassing Pepakura Parts That You Can Use Indoors
i'm going to look into this so i can do the work on the porch without the house smelling like resin. Isn't it rather ironic that it's made here in PA yet there are no distributors in the state? Nearest to me is Michigan and Columbus ohio.

Noticed the web site says the pumps dispense the proper amount with no need for weighing. You find them to be accurate enough?

the pumps measure out the perfect amount per pump, 1 pump of resin and then one pump of the hardener, so if you use say 3 pumps of resin then you will also need 3 pumps of hardener, makes the mixing pretty easy |

maybe it doesn't really matter? Then - 1 pump with part A could be the 4 parts to the one pump of part b which is the 1 part? I guess that's what they mean. |

Re: Alternative To Fiberglassing Pepakura Parts That You Can Use Indoors
I'm glad that someone is looking for something non-toxic. When I started this process a few years ago, I started out knowing nothing and ended up higher than a kite, with subsequent headaches and later ended up with Pneumonia for months from breathing in the fumes. Yeah, I should have known better..... But I was in a hurry.

Re: Alternative To Fiberglassing Pepakura Parts That You Can Use Indoors
Ya the resin pump gives out the 4 parts and the hardener pump gives out the 1 part,

I'll have to play with this stuff at some point. If it can take high heat, this might be a great way to do vacuum forming positive tools
